Not sure about where is the best place to post this but today's Guardian Money has a good article on people who have been caught out by s cammers on the holiday lettings websites (as have some members here as evidenced by posts in the forums here) with some useful tips as to things you can do to minimise the risk.

We've rented quite a few private properties in the past but they've usually been through an agent who, after we've paid a small deposit, have paid the balance in cash in resort. I won't book anywhere that asks for a breakage deposit 'refundable in about 2 weeks' either. 
Each time we've had to pay a breakage deposit we've gotten it back in resort when we've handed in the keys.

Please ,tell me what to do? I booked Turkish Ailines flight online from an Agency on 3/4/13 for an August 2013 holiday and I've paid the fist £200.00 deposit (ATOL certificate???). I have been asked to pay the full balance on the 9th/4/13, which i did. I received emails with all the flight details and telling me that the tickets will be delivered shortly. But nothing was happening. On the 15/05/13 the Agent sent me an email asking me to pay additional money to get the tickets from a different airline because they couldn't get me a seat on Turkish airlines.I don't have the additional money. I am worry now! What do you advice me to do?
