Check the American Express website as it lists all the ATM's that accept their card in a particular place.

Hi mummyladybird

Was in Salou a few years ago, and had no problems using my visa electron card then.

Are there charges on a nationwide cashcard for withdrawing money abroad?
Reply
Absolutely no charges, unless the ATM owner imposes one like they do at the casinos in Las Vegas, and a top rate of interest too.

There is definately no charge from cash machines displaying the Cirrus symbol. But as Luci says other ATM owners may.

Don't believe all you read about high ATM charges. It depends on who you bank with at home as to whether they pass on the charges or not. Plus, you need to look at the whole picture! Don't forget that exchange rates for cash and travellers cheques vary and also that you will pay a commission on travellers cheques!!!

Here's the proof that cash is CHEAPER from an ATM than exchanging at home before you go to Crete.

My wife exchanged some cash and bought 350 euros before going on 29th September. She shopped around for a good rate and got an exchange rate of 1.42 euros to the pound, so she paid £248.23 for her 350 euros.

I was busy at work and didn't get a chance to exchange money before going, so I took what euros I had left from the previous visit and used the cash machines. I went to the cash machine (ATE Bank) on the morning we arrived on 30th and took out 350 euros. On looking at my account (Yorkshire Bank) on my return, I got a far better interbank exchange rate of 1.471 euros to the pound, which more than covered the £8.32 charge that was levied for the exchange. I therefore was charged £246.37 including all charges for my 350 euros, saving £1.86. Cheaper than exchanging cash or taking travellers cheques and paying the commission charges.

As for the Amex Travellers Cheque card. BUYER BEWARE! This card incurs charges every time that you withdraw funds from it via an ATM or it appears otherwise. I found this out to my dismay in Crete earlier this year. Also, it is very frequent when trying to use Amex in a cash machine in Crete or other parts of Greece to get the message "Unable to complete transaction" or words to that effect and it simply spits the card back out. It seems that the Greek ATM network does not have good connectivity to Amex and it is very hit and miss if you can withdraw money from your card or not whilst there.

It is also worth knowing that in some countries even ATM's that carry the logo of your card will only accept it if it is an international ATM,I have found this out as we are off to Brazil in a couple of weeks and have been advised that about only 1 in 5 ATM's will accept foreign cards.

A word of warning on the Visa ATM locator link.....

The addresses shown may not be 100% correct but if you're check carefully you ought to be able to match them up on a map. But the Google maps provided by the link can be hopelessly wrong! Firstly the little markers on the map only appear when you've browsed the text details, so if there is more than one page of them you have to go through each page to get all the markers on the map. Except it's not worth it, because the cooridinates used are often wrong!

Whilst planning my recent trip to the German/Swiss border I asked it for machines on each side. The German markers looked a bit odd (a couple with low number addresses were half way down long streets when I would have expected them near to one end) but the Swiss ones were all over the place. One was in the wrong town completely and one was on a bridge over the Rhein. Having crossed that bridge several times before I was pretty certain the only things bolted to it were street lights and the border signs.

So I asked for those near my house just to check whether this was a blip. There are two listed for the railway station (correct!). One had it's full address shown as the bank branch responsible for it and the marker on the map showed it there, nearly a mile from where it actually is. The other had it's marker in the garden of a house outside of town and nowhere near where it should be - or anything else to do with a bank.

Save yourself a confusing walk, load Google maps seperately and search the address shown in the list.

Okay, how can I speed up people waiting in line at the cash machine? I mean its always the same you get stuck behind 5 people who appear to be using the bloody thing for the first time. Even after they have finally got their money and receipt and card back they still stand there looking at the bloody thing like its going to give them something else. Please tell me subtle ways to get the line moving faster.

Hi Hannah123 and welcome to HT!

This topic is about finding ATM's abroad and it is perhaps best if the possible solution on how to get people to speed up once at a ATM is discussed on a specialised "frustration at a ATM" forum elsewhere on the web.
