I'm flying out to Toronto from Heathrow on BA099 and returning from JFK to Heathrow on BA112. Is the IFE on demand i.e. can I chose which film I want to watch?

In short , Yes !!
The BA99 flight might be on a 777 or 747 , and the 112 flight is usually on a 747
Most of the 747 s have a Rockwell Collins system which is AVOD and the 777 s some have the RC or Thales system which is also AVOD , if you had selected the BA93 flight to Toronto it would be on the 787 .
