I'm sure you can...but never used them in Bulgaria.

Although they are a good safety option, they are 'expensive' when you cash them at a bank because of the heavy charges, 5%-8% I have been told.

I tend to take clean Sterling notes and change them at the bank rather that the 'Exchange Desk' in hotels if needed. Once again the hotel rates offered are usually rather poor, if not down right ridiculous.

Taking cash has it's risks, but. if you are careful and use the Safety Deposit Box you are going to be offered you should be better off with more Leva in your own pocket.
