hi,

has anyone ever done a d.i.y. holiday to sunny beach,

i have been looking at package deals, around £500 to £600 each for 2 weeks 4*

but i have found a site where i can get the same hotel for £275 for two of us.

and flights for£300 for two of us

also as the airport is only 30 minutes,i would imagine getting a taxi would be no problem.

any tips on this would be welcome

Hi Channel Hilghlander,

You will find some information in our Airport Transfers section and more if you use the site's "Search" facility - try searching for for 'taxi AND Bourgas AND airport'.

I always make my own way to Bulgaria these days - but never to Sunny Beach.

Hi Irene,

Not to my taste - it's too big, brash & overcommercialised.

I have a house in the North East coastal area so tend not to visit the resorts, apart from (maybe) the odd day trip to Albena or Sveti Konstantin.

Hi Irene

This is my opinion only.

Just looked at the site Diytravel and dont think i'd be prepared to book there,(not saying anythings not right)but they say they dont have to be abta or atol members.
And i dont know if its the done thing when booking a hotel, when they say "We send guest names to the hotel approximately 1 week before check-in".

Maybe i'm being to cautious after what happened the other week.

Hi,

Doing a DIY holiday can be good value compared to tour operators , as long as you stick to well establised companys and do you research before you go you shouldnt have any problems. I reccomend medhotels.com for booking hotels . When you work out your price bear in mind that you will have to arrange and pay for your own transfers to and from the resort and also that the very cheapest flight usually have inconvenient timings.

The disadvantages are you do not have a rep to call on if there are any problems so you need to be fairly confident in dealing directly with airline and hotel staff. Proper research on sites like this one can ensure you are well prepared , know what to expect and can provide the same information you would normally get for your rep at a welcome meeting.

Dont be scared by the DIY thing ...there are BIG savings to be had if you plan it right.

The best of luck in planning your holiday.....I am off to Golden Sands tomorrow on my second DIY this year......
