December is a good time to, still warm during the day but it will be a bit cooler at night requiring a cardigan / jumper.

Hi, I am a great fan of Hurghada, having been there 9 times and booked up for my tenth. I have also stayed 4 times in Sharm. Despite being a tourist town Hurghada has more of an 'Egyptian', less sanitised and less 'Brits abroad' feel to it than Sharm which is why I prefer it. However, if snorkelling off the beach is the main attraction for you Sharm may be a better choice.

My favourite hotel has to be The Grand Resort in the village road, pedestrianised area of Hurghada where there are plenty of restaurants, pharmacies and shops etc. I have also stayed at the lower rated sister hotel The Grand Hotel and the Hurghada Marriott. The Grand Resort is available through redseaholidays.co.uk. If any of these hotels are of interest to you would be happy to help with any queries.

Thanks for the replies.

I would prefer a more egyptian feel so sounds like Hurghada would be perfect.

I'm going to check all the links out, thanks very much. - Redseaholidays site cant give me a quote for Dec yet! Hotels on there look beautiful though :tongue

We have just returned from the Albatros Palace, in Hurghada, and can definately recommend that hotel.

Hi LisaBelle,

We have been to Sharm 3 times and Makadi Bay (30 mins from Hurghada) twice. We stayed at the Sunrise Royal Makadi Bay on both occasions, and would highly reccommend it. Great food (2 buffet restaurants and 3 a la cartes), beach is ideal for children (gently shelving, calm and easy on your feet) and huge childrens pool (approx 3.5 feet deep right through) with 3/4 slides.

We did venture into Hurghada a few times in the evening, however, and IMHO it looked a bit of a building site to me.

Regards,
Pat

True, there are some unfinished/abandonned hotels which are an eyesore together with other areas which are somewhat less than pretty! It is not a sanitised, Disney version of Egypt like El Gouna for example (not that I'm knocking El Gouna as I do plan to get around to staying there sometime!).

However, I find the architecture and decor of the Grand Resort stunning and its situation in the pedestrianised Village Road area ideal as I love being able to step out of the hotel and have somewhere to wander to. The old town of Dahar and the busy commercialised area of Sekalla with its new and beautiful marina are only a short taxi ride away.
