Hi there, I remember reading on this site another complaint about Lapland on the same day you went. It was posted on the 5th Dec under activity/specialised holidays headed complaint about Lapland (or something similar) if you have trouble finding it just use the search bar and type in Lapland it will bring it up. Might be of interest to you though?

Hi, A few years ago we went on a day trip to Lapland(not with Canterbury Travel) with our terminally ill youngest son. He absolutely loved it, and as we wanted to do as much as we could with him during his short life we decided to book to go for a week with Canterbury travel. It was very expensive but as it was for our son we knew we just had to do it. We contacted them beforehand to let them know he was disabled. He was blind and could only walk a frew steps with help. They told us it was suitable for him so we booked up to stay in one of their log cabins. Anyway, I must say the place was beautiful, but as far as being suitable for a disabled child, that was rubbish. We spent most of the excursions sitting in the coach with him as he was unable to participate in very few of them. Our log cabin was about the furthest away from the restaurant so every day we would struggle to get him up there for our meals. Saying that he did have a lovely time doing the things he could participate in but they were very few. I was annoyed after paying all that money and them telling me it was suitable for a disabled child. On our last day we were given a questionaire to fill out, which I did, stating about the problems we encountered. My name and address was on the form and they never even acknowledged that they had read it. I never heard from them again. We did not pursue it further as we were too busy with our son's health problems at the time. I wish now I had put in a formal complaint. Although it was very expensive, the money was not an issue. I would gladly have paid double just for our son to have the time of his life, i was just so annoyed with them for telling me it was suitable for disabled.

Hi

Im sorry to hear you had trouble, it must have been very disappointing for you and your family.

In order to make a formal complaint though, you are required to put it in writing within a "reasonable amount of time" on your return home. (preferably 28 days) but I would write anyway and explain your reasons for not writing sooner and your cicrumstances.

I hope it works out for you.

Hi
We went to Lapland in Dec 2003 with Canterbury Travel and really can't fault them. We went for the day on 19th Dec and it was absolutely fantastic! We deliberately avoided the very commercialised Rovaniemi and went to a little village called Hetta a few hundred kilometres further north. We had a wonderful time in this small village, we were picked up at the airport by Skidoo's and travelled across a frozen lake to get there. We had unlimited husky, reindeer, horse sleigh rides etc, there were childrens skidoos as well as adults and a wonderful snow castle. Santa himself knew the childrens names as soon as we walked in to his cabin and he had a good chat with them and read their letters with them, we didn't feel rushed at any point. We would definitely go again with Canterbury travel, they were the only company to go to this small village and for uncommercialised fun in the snow it was brilliant!!

ps Because of our recommendations 3 separate groups of friends went on the same trip last December and all had a fantastic time and would def go again!

As Stewart said above, perhaps if you could tell the board a bit about what was wrong, someone could help you?

Re: Lapland Dream trip with above company 4\12\04
I have registered my grievances with ABTA,The Finnish Tourist Board in
Helsinki, and the travel section of The Sunday Telegraph.
ABTA does not divulge the names of companies registered with them, who have been fined by their Legal Dept. for not adhering to the ABTA code.
Canterbury Travel Ltd has started advertising again in local newspapers
for custom this winter.
Watch this space for complaints about them in January 06.
I spent £1,200 ( 3 people ) for 4 hours in Finland and was appalled by
what Canterbury Travel provided. It was supposed to be a `one-off`
memorable experience.....It was - for all the wrong reasons.
Don`t waste your money.

As I said before we had a fab day in Lapland with Canterbury travel. Our flight left the UK at 8.00am we arrived in Lapland at 1.15pm local time, getting our snowsuits and boots was very quick and extremely well organised and we were ready to get our snowmobiles to Hetta about 30mins later. We had a full 6 1/2 hours in the village and we got the last coach back to the airport, got changed and then on to the plane when we wanted. No checking in as that was all done back in Exeter.
It was the best day of our lives we absolutely loved it and if we can we will certainly go again with Canterbury travel.

You obviously had a bad experience but you can't say that Canterbury travel are a bad Company! I guess you must have had a flight delay to only spend 4 hours there! I too wouldn't have been happy with only 4 hours, but problems do occur and I really hope you get yours sorted out.

If you dont get any joy with your complaint take it to ABTA who are the travel governing body. I'm sure when they are involved things will move much quicker.

We booked a trip for us and our young nephew and niece from Belfast last December with Canterbury Travel, we had been recomended Canterbury Travel and specifically choose them. Exactly 6 weeks before we were due to travel we recieved a letter saying our trip had been cancelled due to low numbers. When we called they said they had no room on any other tour so we were left high and dry. How could they do that knowing young children had been told they were going. When I called I spoke to a supervisor who I could hear liasing with a Director, when I asked to speak with him I heard him say NO he would not speak with me. Anyway we eventually rebooked with Transun. Flight out was delayed 2 hours, but we stayed in lapland 2 hours extra, we had an accident when a Skiddo we were on overturned and ruined the day as we were all bruised and the kids nervous. When we got home we sent them a letter about what happned and they told us it was the first time a skiddo had overturned and refunded our money in full. Was happy with the way Transun handled things but I would never advise anyone to book with Canterbury travel incase you end up with disappointed children.
