Jacqui,
Have done the med quite a few times with Thomson Ships.
I assume you are doing the Cruise and Stay hense the all inclusive upgrade for the hotel. This would be for the standard local drinks and all meals in the hotel. This has nothing to do with the drinks package on baord. In order to get your free drinks on board you need to purchase a drinks package, or get it free like me as I book very early. Food as you know on the ship is free 24hrs a day for everyone anyway.
Trips -
Villefranche is a lovely small town using a tender. Great little beach. Probably best to do a DIY to Monico or Nice. Only a couple of euro on the train. Cost me for 2 adults, 1 child 22 euro return. Train station is about 300 yards from were the tender drops you off. You can also get the bus at the top of the hill. 1 euro each to Monico or Nice. Once you get to Monico walk out of the station and look up to your right. You will see the Palace. Walk up to that. Loads going on up there with loads of restaurants and shops. Jump on the noddy train up there and it will take you along the coast past all the yachts. (mine is the big brown one), to the Casinos in Monte Carlo. Dont sit in the square outside the Casinos and eat unless you are loaded. It is well too expensive.
Rome - DIY again. 9 Euro in the train. Train station is just outside the port on the right. 2 train stops in Rome. First one is the Vatican and the second (Termini) is the centre of the city. You can reach all the points of interest on foot. Or just jump on an open top bus. Trains every hour to and from. If you leave about 3.30 you will make it back to the ship with loads of time to spare. Average Thompson Shore excursion is anything from 76euro to 100 euro p/pers. Only difference is you can jump the ques at the museums. There is still a lot of walking to do with the organised tours as the tour buses are not allowed in the centre of the city. I got a group of other people who were waiting for the train and 8 of us jumped into a taxibus and negotiated 45 euro each to Rome all day. Taxi driver (Maximillion), took us to all the interesting places and took us to a nice local cheap restaurant for lunch. He brought us back at 5.30pm then we paid him. Fantastic day. Probably do the same again in July if I can grab a load of people before they jump onto the train.
Corsica is lovely. No need to do anything here. The town is beutiful with shops/markets and they also have a nice beach.
You can probably tell im not a fan of bus trips nor do I want to pay the extorsionate prices Thompsons are asking for these trips because its just like jumping onto a bus or train in your home town. Youll never get lost. Someone always speaks English and will point you in the right direction.
I heard that Thompsons were going to go live on their website to book the excursions prior to leaving. There again they have been talking about it for a while. There is a bit on their web site for this but it dosnt work just yet. If you are booking a trip dont wait until after the destination services do their presentation on your first sea day because it is bedlam after that. Qued all the way around the ship. If you have read up the trips prior to leaving, book it straight away once you get on baord.
Im looking forward to the 7th July on the Destiny for 2 weeks with my free drinks package. Whop Whop. Have fun
