Croatia?
I've never been but it's fairly new on the holidays map!

I would agree with Croatia. The people are as friendly and helpful and the Turks, and the food is delicious.
I still prefer Turkey though, and enjoy trying to find places that are like the Turkey of 20 years ago i.e. when waiters run after you trying to give you the tip you left them, back! Ah, the good old days!

thanks for all the replies.
i do still like turkey, its just that greed has crept in in places like hisaronu and olu deniz.
i know they have to earn a living but big money people come in and buy up bars hotels etc they rent them out at extortionate prices.
and prices food and drinks just sore.
last year we went to gochek on a day trip lovely little place not really commercialized and i could not believe the difference in prices, everything by way of drink and food was at least 40% less than hisaronu and olu deniz.
i know price is not what the holiday is all about, but to pay for example 20 lira for a dinner with the owner gaining all the profit is fine but to pay 20 lira and the renter is only getting maybe 5 lira i resent this.
i know this is what makes the world go round, but this dont mean i have to like it or accept it.
and i have decided to vote with my wallet,as much as i love going to hisaronu i want somewhere that is excellent value and is in a natural environment.
hisaronu as became so false the people who work there in bars and shop earn an absolute pittance and big boys take the cream.
well i want my money to go directly to the people who work for it and those that make my holiday what it is.
not some greedy faceless company after a fast buck.
i am going on a bit now, sorry but im just trying to put my feelings on paper so to speak.
any more advice would be helpful.
names and places i can read up on in croatia or other countries.
thanks gazza

Gazza, thats exactly how we feel about turkey now .We've been 8 times and it pains me to say this but I do not want to go back and get ripped off again. The first time we went was 19 yrs ago and it bears no resemblance now to the turkey of then. This year it was mostly bland food ,same menu every restaurant ,no prices in shops so they charged you what they made up when you asked. In bars and on the boat trips we were well overcharged for drink we did not drink. Next year I'm looking for somewhere different.

What is being discribed happened in spain, companies buying shops, bars and restaurants then redevelope it and charge sky high prices to people to rent the place. I actually think places like majorca are cheaper than turkey now. The bar owners and restaurant owners learnt the hard way when they jacked up prices after the euro came in, locals stopped eating out, something they would do 2 to 3 times per week and tourist stopped going and went to cheaper places. The result, prices dropped and prices have not really risen for about 3 years. I expect the turks will have to learn the same lesson when tourist stay away.

North Cyprus is a good alternative to Turkey.

Much cheaper too. :D

We went to Sunny Beach for the 1st time last month and were amazed at the prices, now dont get me wrong Sunny beach is fairly commercialised , but if you take bus to RAVDA, BOUGAS, St Vlas, etc then you will see the real Bulgaria

Croatia is stunning and I would highly recommend it.
Ive been to Turkey many times, but its not the same anymore. They have well and truly jumped on the band wagon of "lets rip off the tourists". As the other poster said Turkey will learn the hard way, same as happened in Spain and probably Greece also. There are plenty other places to choose from and when tourists start staying away they will soon bring the prices down. I remember being in Altinkum about 4 or 5 years ago, the prices had jumped up no end from the season before, and one bar owners answer to this? "Its because of the Euro!" Turkey isnt even involved with the Euro, its laughable
Yes the Turkish people are lovely, but people are nice ANYWHERE if they are getting money from you.

Turkey is still great VFM, if you know where to go!

In the last couple of years, we have been to Ciftlik, on the outskirts of Cesme (DIY villa rental, flying to Izmir), and Cavus (3* b&b, flying to Antalya). Both holidays were extremely good VFM. If I told you the prices, including spending money, I would have to shoot you!

2008, we are visiting Gundogan on the Bodrum Peninsula - again a quieter resort.

Turkey is still wonderful if you take the time to find the OTBT resorts.
