I'm not sure if the railway passes through Benidorm but you can travel directly from Alicante. It takes a bit over 4 hours and cost 39 to 45 euros (each way I think).
You can also fly from Alicante taking an hour and costs 114 euros return.
Train detail are on http://www.renfe.es and flights on http://www.iberia.com.
You could also consider the bus which may very well go from Benidorm.

Unfortunately, Benidorm rail services only operate on the single track line serving stations between Alicante and Denia.

Bus services do operate between Benidorm and Barcelona, timetables and fares can be found HERE.

PS There is a bus service from Benidorm to Barcelona. It can take up to 8 hours and costs about 62 euros. See www. alsa.es

The train doesn't go thorough Benidorm, you have to go to Alicante. You can check the buses from Benidorm here http://www.alsa.es in "rutas y horarios". My fav is the beautiful Euromed, just a few stops and much confortable than the bus. Unless you get a bargain, it's not worthy to go by plane, as you loose so much time at the airport for just a 40 minutes trip...
Whatever you choose, you'll enjoy the wonderful Barcelona :D

Hi Gaia 45 - tried the link to http://www.alsa.es/ and the page listed the country destination etc. Couldn't seem to find the info on the 'posh bus' you described. Maybe you can help point me in the right area.

Sorry for my poor explanation, Mercedes, the Euromed is a train, faster than the "normal" ones and only stops three times before Barcelona, not in every little place on the way. As for Alsa bus, they had a service called Supra, at least to go to Madrid, that also stops in less places than the regular bus, and they used to give a snack and a better service. I've check the web page and there is a service to Barcelona called Eurobus, that only stops at Valencia and Barcelona. I guess it's the same as Supra. By the way, there are 2 bus stations in Barcelona, and most of the buses go to Barcelona Nord.
