Troodos is the main mountain range in Cyprus. It extends for many tens of kilometers and has many montains, valleys, villages, forests, picnic areas, etc. I believe that for the vast majority of routes on the island (there are few exceptions) one could explore (on asphalt road or good quality dirt roads) in a regular car and there is no need really for a 4 by 4.
Troodos square is about 160 km from Protaras (if you drive through Limassol). There are other routes that may be shorter, but may be slower.
Troodos and Paphos forest have walking routes (of various lengths and difficulty levels) well worth visited. A number of these routes are almost continuously under shade, so one could even walk them during the hot summer months.
If you want to find info about the various walking trails, the venetian bridges and the waterfalls in the area, please explore my website.
Take care
