I haven't been to Kalkan or Dalyan but I have been to Bitez and it is very nice there, not at all tacky and far quieter than nearby Gumbet. If you hated Gumbet 16 years ago it is even worse now ;) but bitez is nothing like that.

The beach is nice, a bit more shingley than really sandy but still very pleasant and there are alots of restaurants and a couple of bars, lots of nice hotels and apartments and within easy reach of Bodrum.

from what I hear though any of the resorts you are looking at will suit you so I'm sure you will find something nice.

I haven't been to Bitez but can recommend both Dalyan and my favourite, Kalkan. The town beach is pebbly but you are not far away from the most beautiful beach, Patara. The town is gorgeous, old buildings, cobbled streets and flowers everywhere. You couldn't wish for more choice in wonderful restaurants, many of them are roof top. Very popular with brits but definitely not an egg and chips place.

What I liked most about Dalyan was the position of our hotel right on the river banks. Very quiet and scenic. The town itself is not as pretty but there are plenty of restaurants and bars to keep your evenings occupied. Very well placed too as it is only 20 mins from Dalaman and you are right where the famous mud baths and rock tombs are. The rock tombs are lit up at night and look quite spectacular.

Kalkan is pretty, but not much of a beach, but you can get to lots of other places from there and as already mentioned Patara beach is gorgeous, jump dolmus to it.

Dalyan is also very nice, 20 mins from airport which has got to be a plus, lots of trips, the beach is about
15 mins on the dolmus through loverly sceenery, regular service.
Dalyan is very chilled, a beautiful river runs through it, great for a walk in the evening, a pretty park at the end were you can have a soft drink. Some very nice hotels on the river, couldnt be more chilled than that.
We fell in love with the place 2 yeas ago, we are here for eight weeks this time, :sun2

have you thought about akyaka that is gorgeous. we went to bitez a few mths ago and found it very expensive compared to akyaka and the beach or scenery not a patch on akyaka it was very stoney to get in the sea. akyaka has a lovely sandy beach, very turkish and is in a conservation area so kept really lovely. have a look at the photo gallery ive put a few photos of akyaka in there and look at this link. akyaka seems to tick all the boxes you are asking for, lovely beach, lovely restaurants, low key but not totally dead, fab scenery and 50 mins from dalaman airport

One thing to bear in mind with Kalkan is that it is built on the side of a fairly steep hill, so is unsuitable for anyone with any walking difficulties. The other two places are flat.

Glad you made this posting as I am looking at either Dalyan or Bitez for next summer, (need a change from the A Inc hotels in Sharm). Looked at Bitez earlier in the year but now am thinking towards Dalyan so all advice much appreciated. We have been to Akyaka and loved it there but fancy a complete change. My main concern would be mozzies in Dalyan (we would have to go August time).

Also can I ask with what seems to be happening with the `airlines etc` would you still consider booking a DIY holiday (we have done this many times in the past to Turkey but am a little wary at the moment)

Whats the wildlife like in Dalyan (as most of you know I have a snake phobia so need to check this bit out...)

Many thanks for all advice and help. xx

We stayed in Bitez this year for two weeks in July. The night life is very low key,was too quiet for us and we are in our 50's! Also found it to be expensive compared to other resorts. It is not at all tacky. The sea was too stoney for our liking, normally we spend a lot of time in the sea. There were several large dogs that continually roamed the beach and promenade which was off putting. No one was sure if they were strays or owned as many wore collars.Lots of places to eat,but again we thought overpriced.Havent been to Kalkan or Dalyan.

@ Ellie-meg

I have tried viewing that web page before, you have to register and although I have done that I still can't view it. It does not recognise my id if I try to re-register it says I'm registered, if I ask for a reminder password it says it dosen't recognise me. I even tried with a different email address.

Yes Gumbet has certainly changed a lot, I first went about 18 years ago and it is unrecognisable now. If I hadn't lived there and got used to the place I would probably hate it to go to on holiday, but is like a second home now. Bitez is a far nicer resort though.

Regular visitor to Kalkan but was disappointed in Dalyan.Because of the river there are lots of midgies and the restaurants are very inferior to those in Kalkan. However Dalyan is on the flat and there is an ongoing yapping stray dog problem in Kalkan. However, cannot comment on Bitez but may well try it soon.
