hi this property has a CTO 4star (provisinal)rating as it is fairly new and will be checked again later this year..
the govenment department for each country sets the standards hence acomodation of the same rating WILL varie frome country to country the only true comparison is with a property of the same grade in the same country

HI Carla

We stayed at this hotel 5 years ago when it had a 3 star rating, it has since been upgraded to 4 stars.

Looks like you missed some of the Avlida's specialities including:

1. Th overflowing sewage drains at the back of the hotel, did you not notice the aroma in the corridors or see it flowing down the street?

2. the lifts which shut so suddenly and attack you when you try to enter and leave them.

3. At least at the front of the hotel you were not woken by the diggers outside and the sewage truck arriving at dawn every other day accompanied by aforementioned smell!

4. the appalling entertainment where the singers accost you at your table at mealtimes trying to drum up trade for the evening shows. Many a pleasant song was murdered...

And the most unpleasant of all - the outbreak of food poisoning which made the local headlines in Paphos and the holiday programmes

The Avlida is the worst hotel I have ever stayed or ever hope to stay in. I am not at all surprised that you didn't enjoy your stay. It is a shame because Paphos itself is lovely.

Still, its nice to know they've cleaned up the pool!

I agree, this is also the worst hotel we have had the misfortune to stay in.

I would not return to Paphos in a hurry either - the Cypriot way of life seems to have been lost in the mass of english pubs, bars and restuarants.

I am glad I missed the items you mentioned - that would have finished me off!

I am not suprised they had a food poisoning outbreak. The buffet trays are topped up with more food - not replaced, consequently the first lot of food out can sit in the tray for hours - mmm, lovely...

Going to try Goa next year. My friends have been and rave about the place. I am intending to do lots of research, and stay 4-5 star.

Nice talking to you

carla- a bit off topic here, but was paphos really 'that' bad if you took away the british eateries etc? been looking into going and I have to admit we tend to eat in such places due to my awkward/fussy eating habits

Hi Ian

The restuarants would therefore be ideal for you - here are loads of English restuarants. I would steer clear of the Chineses as these are poor. Fat Mamas on Tomb of the Kings Road would be a good restuarant to try - similar to Frankie and Bennies, guaranteed you will not eat all that is on your plate.

We did not find any eateries that we considered to be serving "top" quality food - e.g. no specialised restuarants with proper chefs, therfore not much effort goes into the flavours of your meal.

We tend to look on our holidays not only for the R&R and great weather, but also to eat local foods and experience the local way of life. If you also want this I would recommend a smaller resort.

I am sure if our accomodation had been of the required standard we would not have viewed Paphos in the way we have - having had the number of issues we had, it did make it difficult to enjoy your holiday.

Just steer clear of the Avlida! A hotel we did look at was the Almerya, this is great in terms of location, food etc. If we did ever return we would stay here.

Hope this helps?

thanks thats great :)

Such a shame about your hotel, I can totally sympathise over the hell it was, when your main base is that bad, you can never totaly enjoy the holiday.

Fortunately we do a lot of private renting and have never had a bad experience, but I can see why you did. Hopefully you can get some compensation because I know i'd be mad if all those things happened to me :(

We will have to wait and see on the "compo" front, I will post the site to let everyone know the outcome.

Only other thing I would say (having spotted your age), make sure you travel in the main part of the season. My partner and I found bar street and the clubs pretty dead - what with that and an empty hotel, entertaining yourself was difficult. We did find a good bar on Tomb of the Kings road, the Aussie bar. Prices were reasonable for food and drink - staff behind the bar were very friendly.

Cyprus is very expensive, for food and drink. In bar street your talking £6 (sterling) for two bacardis and coke!!!! Take plenty of money...hope you have a better time than we did.
