Thank you for the reply - that was another thing i was wondering - if both beaches were affected. I've spoken to people on a few websites and it sounds like the beaches are now open but with a few construction things going on nearby, so thats not too bad. Noise i can cope with :) i can't drive, but i think the buses are pretty regular to ayia napa so not so bad. I was only wondering really because i wasn't sure whether to book 1 of the hotels on the beach or not. hope you have a nice holiday.

They are extending the coastal path.
Fig tree is affected but they plan to be finished before the main season starts.
As of yesterday they had got as far down as vrissiana coming from the McDonald's end. Access to the beach might not be direct right now but the beach itself is clear.

Which hotel(s) are you looking at?

Hi Pubdog
We were choosing between silver sands, constantinos and the antigoni. We stayed at the constantinos last time and have such great memories of it because it was such a lovely hotel that we don't want to taint those memories with a building site. So we have opted for the Antigoni now as that is set back from the beach. As long as we can access the beaches, that is the main thing. Is the beach itself like a construction site - can you access it but have to dodge building materials/vehicles as you are walking along it?

@pubdog I also forgot to ask - when you say main season - does that mean they will be stopping work 1st May or does it mean more June when it gets really busy? thank you

Hi again Becci30,
The beaches themselves are clear although there is equipment etc between the back of some of the hotels and the beach, hence my comment about access. Once you reach the coastal path it's ok, at least as far down as vrissiana. Not been down today but probably a good bit further along by now.

They had planned to be finished by now, but are going great guns. I think they will be done by the time you get here.

Am escaping from a certain wedding tomorrow by hiding up the Troodos mountains but will drop into Protaras Saturday and take some photos :-)

will the path go right to the top of fig tree bay then nr to the ice cream man and how is fig tree affected

Thank you pubdog, i feel much better about it all now :) Don't blame you hiding in the troodos mountains tomorrow because 1. the troodos mountains are breathtaking and 2. everyone and every tv channel will be talking about the same thing tomorrow ;) . . . Hope you have a good day . . . some pics of how it is in the next couple of days would be great though, thanks.

Ok. Been to prot today and got a few pics.
Not nearly as bad (?) as you might think.

Iallen, there are minor works at either end of figtree. At the watersports end there are new changing rooms (?) and what looks like an extension to the carpark. At the other end there are some new kids play areas. The beach is clear though.

I am doing this via mobile so might get pics in wrong order. All the main works are by, and at the back of vrissiana. That is where the crane is.

I need to resize the pics but in the meantime they are the first few here

The beach is clear, but you might make out the big crane next to Vrissiana. This work is not going to be finished any time soon, but I imagine they will postpone it for the holiday season. The only affect is that you can't get on the beach from the road down the side of Vrissiana.

great pics, thanks for the update... been sounding a lot more worrying than that from what people have been posting all over the internet..

I'd say the first and 3rd pics are probably going to be platform areas and seating... like there is along the Pernera end of the path...

Thank you so much for the photos pubdog, they have really put my mind at rest. Can't wait to get out there now. There has been a lot of scaremongering about it on other forums, so its so good to see that its not as bad as other people were making out it was :)

No problem, happy to help :)
Yesterday I read on another thread about access problems from the Sunrise Beach, so off we went to investigate...

Please note that all these pics were taken yesterday, 03rd May 2011

...and in the interest of trying to show the whole picture, the works to the back of Vrissiana, between it at the Iliada. This was the only works we saw actually encroaching on the beach

Hi,

I hope you can help!

My partner and I are staying at the vrissiana hotel on 21st June next Tuesday (very excited) I know about the building works next door, which doesn't bother me. My main worry is the building works on the beach. Is this still happening and is it still restricting access on the beach? Thank you!!! xxx :D

Hi Wilko, we are off to Cyprus on Tues too and have stayed at the Sunrise Beach many times but this year fancied a change so staying at Nissi Bay. I've read on Trip advisor conflicting accounts about the building work, one poster said all the building work had stopped until Oct(so not finished) and that the beach was back to normal but someone replied that he had stayed at the Kouzalis Hotel and some people arrived from the Sunrise Beach after been moved because of the mess on the beach, this was dated June 12th so I guess it depends on who's opinion you agree with. I'm not a beach person, i like to stay in beachfront hotels but only for the view, i prefer the pool so the beach alterations would not bother me but if you like going on the beach maybe it would bother you.... We will be visiting Protaras and the Sunrise Beachas we have some friends staying there at that time so i will have a look then.... Happy holidays, great hotel..
