hi scunnin wonderful post takes me right back to my first time in egypt. so true with all the scams.
at the end of the day to the local egyption we are all rich and yes they do expect something for nothing or for doing very little like giving you tea or telling you about some markings on a wall etc....
but all that said be firm not rude and you will find most of the egyptions are the most lovely people in africa..
i fell in love with egypt the moment i arrived and hoping to return on my 4th trip next year.
in fact when i die i want to be scattered in the valley of the kings (dont know if this will be allowed)..

Thank you...I found your post very informative....we have visited Egypt before as a stop of on a cruise and have done the Pyramids at Giza....and yes we were hassled big time......I understand that they are a poor nation and need to make money but I have been to other countries where the population was just as poor and their locals didn't see the need to hassle you to the extreme.
I suppose it's part and parcel of a holiday in Egypt but we don't have to like it....I'm going to Hurghada for 9 days in 4 weeks time....I'm not looking forward to all the forceful selling but at least now I know what to expect

Tangobunny as long as you know what is coming you generally can be polite and say no and keep walking and most people will bug you for a few seconds, after they realise you arent interested they back off. Saying about police is really worst case scenario.

Hurghada is a nice place overall, but it is what it is. Most of the people won't bother you that much :) Just remember drink as much water as you can. It was very humid when I was there due to change in direction of the wind. Also buy your visa there at the airport if you a European with US dollars rather than Euros or British pounds. Also try to use US dollars as they dont rip you off as much, when I was there they had about 7 Egyptian pounds to the Euro, dont pick up Egyptian pounds if you can help it as they will rip you off with that.

@madasharley,

dont get me wrong I dont think every Egyptian is bad, but its difficult to really tell the difference between who is truly friendly and who is trying to sell you things or rip you off! ;) And agree be firm but not rude.

I've ordered my dollars in small denominations as I can use that for tips etc.....I've also ordered some Egyptian pounds as we will be in Egypt for 16 days in total....we will probably need their currency more when we go in the Nile cruise in the second week as we are only FB on the boat.....we are AI in Hurghada so won't need that much local currency

Tango with the local pounds they increased the rate quite dramatically, be careful of that ...

I think on the cruise you can charge your drinks onboard and then pay at the end of the cruise in a currency of your choice or by credit card.

I went on a Nile Cruise last November, not the same boat as you Tango but Cyprus100 is correct, we just signed for drinks and paid the bill at the end. CC or cash, any currency. There was also a currency exchange facility on board.

hi tango on the cruise you do not pay as you go just sign for drinks and pay at reception desk at end.
drinks can be expensive on board so take some duty free with you and just order coke then go up on deck and add your own spirits.
you will love the sites on the cruise but be warned most excurrsions are very early start as they like you back on the boat before it gets to hot.
not a great deal of nightlife on board (although most boats will have the egyptian night with belly dancer snakecharmer etc) so early nights can be had.
some of the trips you can do on your own as the temples may be near where the boat docks.
edfu is one.
also the sun is very strong and when you are cruising in the day you dont notice the heat because of the breaze so use plenty of suncream or you will burn bad.
my best ever suntan was on the nile.
I have no doubt at all you will have a great time and fall in love with the nile.

Hello, thank you so much for your post. It's really interesting and very informative. I have never been to Egypt but I would love to go there some day in the future. I've been thinking about going there next year and if I do go, I'll definitely use your tips. Thank you for the warning about the scams, I was aware that things like that happen in Egypt, but I didn't know it was that common. I'll definitely be sure to watch out for them and be very careful. It's sad that we have to deal with Egyptians treating tourists like that.
