mauritius rain?

laurelin,

Rain in those parts tends to be in quick, short burst rather than throughout the day. January, February and March, on average are the wettest months with 8" of rainfall each month. Even though it's slightly cooler, I prefer to travel to that part of the world August - November as it's dryer and less humid. Mauritius is a fabulous place to visit. The eastern side of the island gets the prevailing winds so it can be a bit windier than the western side. I've stayed on the east coast, the diving is excellent!

whats the snorkelling like? is it off the beach to reefs or do you need to go on a boat and will it be the same boat as divers? my hubby's dives but i dont but love snorkelling. hubbys looking to book to be there first few weeks of april i want to go to egypt, this will be a new destination. your views and info will be much appreciated :)

ELAINE28,

It all depends where you are staying. There are barrier reefs around the island but these are a little too far from the beach to venture out to without a boat. The water is way too deep out there for snorkelling and depending on where you are, too rough as well (east coast gets the prevailing winds). The currents tend to be strong as well so not for the faint hearted. Once beyond the barrer reefs, things settle down again. The diving is great, your hubby will love it. Some beaches have coral reef systems quite close in. For example, Le Coco Beach where I stayed had a fabulous reef just off the beach where the snorkelling was excellent. I went diving around there as well and had some excellent drift dives with King Fish and Black Tip reef Sharks, through the breaks in the reef where the currents are strong. Underwater walking was quite fun too! A few photos for you:
