Just out of interest what do you think is best: MAJORCA or MALLORCA (both pronounced the same, ma-yorka)
the local paper is Majorca but most of the local people say its Mallorca

I thought J's were also pronounced 'y' too?
I think that J is pronounced more like H as in Jardines, Javea, Jesus.

I go to Spanish lesson with a Spaniard here in Lincoln and although I dont think I'll ever speak Spanish it does help a great deal getting the correct pronunciation.
I can also read and understand menus and notices etc.

Seems both is ok........but I always talk about "Mallorca"

Hate to be pedantic. It's Mallorca in both Spanish and Catalan. But why it is "ll" at all is a question. The name's root is from the Latin maior, and the equivalents in Spanish and Catalan are, respectively, mayor and major. And in Catalan, the "j" is pronounced like the English "j" and not the Spanish "(c)h". But Mallorca it has long been. Menorca, no debate. Minorca is an English usage.
Mallorca for me every time and Menorca for it's sister island. I'm not sure why this forum uses Majorca and Menorca as the topic names. Not that it matters but I would have thought it would have been Majorca and Minorca or Mallorca and Menorca but not a mix of the two
I always refer to it as Mallorca, no particular reason though.
Majorca sounds quite chavvy.... "Goin on our 'ols to Mahhh-Jorka init!" Mallorca sounds much better, and I always use Menorca rather than Minorca

According to the Spanish Language Reference I have in front of me the "ll" consonant is pronounced like "yy" in "say yes", but equally many Spanish speakers pronounce it as "j" as in "jar". This explains why the word Mallorca became corrupted, in English usage, into "Mah Jorca". Listening to some native Spanish speakers that's exactly how it would sound. So either is acceptable depending on whom you are talking to. My own experience is that native Spaniards in Mallorca pronounce it with the "yy" sound.
