Hi
You MUST also take travel insurance, make sure you state all existing medical conditions.
Someone else will tell you what the new card does but you DO NEED seperate insurance

Hi

Please use the search facility. It will answer this for you

In short. Yes you need seperate insurance. Your insurance will cover all medical expenses in case the card does not allow treatment on that alone. (providing you tell them of existing med cons).

The card allows you access to treatment - but not all of it is free - your insurance is needed to cover medical costs.

Hi Daisy :D

Yes you still need travel insurance. As you have a pre existing condition

you must tell the insurance company about it.

As not all companies do pre existing conditions have a look on the link

below to see the ones that do.........I know this because I'm in the same

position as you :D I'd recommend M&S first.

You won't be able to get an annual policy with a pre existing condition.

Also you won't have any cancellation cover, in case you're ill before you travel, unless you take out travel insurance. If you go on 2 or more holidays a year it would probably be cheaper to get an annual policy.

THanks for replies guys. I have a company that have insured me in the past that specialise in people with pre-existing medical issues so that is no problem, just got confused if i needed it along with the card.

Bluebabe,

You can get an annual policy with pre-existing conditions.

We have always had annual policies even since my husband was diagnosed with high blood pressure and is on tablets for it. He also has asthma. I have an underactive thryoid. We now have travel insurance as part of our bank account but before that just used a travel insurance company making sure that we declared our conditions. With the bank insurance if you just had one pre-existing condition then no problem - we just had to phone them to get cover for additional conditions.

Very often you will have to telephone the screening line - rather than do it all online.

Just make sure you declare everything!

Hi Pippa :D

I've had travel insurance for my condition many times and the companies

I've spoken to will not give me an annual policy only single trip.

Maybe it depends on what condition you have :D

My mother sprained her ankle when she was in Kapparis a couple of weeks ago. I was in Pernera at the same time.
I got a call from my father to tell me and we all went up to Paralimni general hospital to get it checked.
All they did was take details of where she was staying and the EHIC card number.

In and out in less than an hour including x-rays and painkillers and no charges.

She did have travel insurance as well which cost her extra because she is diabetic but she didn't need it.

I always get travel insurance personally but only because the way I think is if I don't one time something will go wrong. I don't have any medical conditions but it's just a preventative thing.

If you have a medical problem and you have the normal travelers insurance best advice is usually is go to one of the many private hospitals here, nothing wrong with the generals but usually you have to wait and it is an unpleasant wait, private is altogether a better experience in my view, and your insurance should still pay up!

Hope you never have to find out though!!

Bluebabe,

May be it does depend on what the condition is.

When I broke my ankle in Madeira I went to the A&E of the general hospital (we don't know if there was a private one or not.) To ascertain what was wrong and what treatment was needed they just needed to see my passport. Once the diagnosis had been made and they decided an operation was needed they then asked about travel insurance - which of course we had. In the end - primarily because of the not too pleasant state of the hospital I decided to return home for surgery.

However had we not had insurance we would have had to have paid for the repatriation ourselves and as they would not let me fly home without having 3 seats to myself - it would have been very costly. The new card would not have covered that.

Please, please do not even think about travelling without insurance - you never know when you might need it. All I did was have a little trip which resulted in a rather uncomfortable few months!!

You need to take out travel insurance because (God forbid) if anything serious happens (sorry, but.....long-term illness...paralysis...death etc) repatriation is bl**dy expensive.

You definately need travel insurance. My wife needed treatment while in Protaras and they would not do it on EHIC card :( . Good thing we had the travel insurance :)

Should you book a package holiday then it is a condition that you have insurance. If you have an annual policy then you are required to supply details.

Last year when I was cleaning our place I run the sofa over my foot and ripped my big toenail of in one, it was hanging by a thread so with me in shock  we went to the Paralimni hospital we did not wait straight in and attended to, whole bottle of iodine, tetnus , dressings and painkillers, they asked for my E111 which i did not have, nor did i have one i kept meaning to get one  but did have private insurace, they said thats ok just bring your passport back up for us to photocopy and give us the name address and phone number of your doctor in the UK :)

I couldnt care less if i had to pay i was in that much pain, but it soon passed when I realised how good the treatment was :)

Anyone reccomend a good company to use if you have pre-existing medical conditions. We are due to travel to Latchi in August and I still have to arrange insurance.

Thanks

According to the Which magazine out this week the following companies are good for pre-existing conditions

Single trip Europe
The travel insurance agency - http://www.travelinsurers.com
Simple - http://www.simpletravelinsurance.co.uk

Annual Europe
simple (as above)
CIS - http://www.cis.co.uk
The AA http://www.theaa.com
Halfords - http://www.halfords.co.uk

Personally I use Direct travel insurance (INVALID URL and have an annual policy which paid out when I had to cancel a trip due to an illness about 3 years ago. They still cover me for that condition but I pay a slightly higher premium.Worth it for peace of mind!
