Only for the duration of your stay, but check with your airline/tour operator as they sometimes have different rules and some insist on a 3 or 6 months validity.

I'm sure it has to be valid for 6 months after the date of your return.

EU regulations state that the passport has to be valid only for the duration of your stay. But as Luci states some airlines or tour operators have their own rules which could mean you would not be allowed to fly if you couldn't fulfill their conditions, so it's best to check with them.
