Pelion Area

The Pilion region is beautiful. As to where you stay, it all depends what you like. The west side is far more sheltered with shingly/pebbly beaches whereas the east coast is wilder with some spectacular beaches. We stayed in Horton which is very small and friendly with 3 or 4 excellent tavernas.
Have a look at what I wrote on the area.
I am not allowed to post my Virtual Tourist pages that I wrote on the area on this site. Find Virtual Tourist and type in Pilion. Hopefully you will get to my ramblings.

Hi NickandChris
Thanks for the response. I have read your report on the Pilion area and it sounds wonderful.
We haven't decided where to stay yet as we are still investigating possibilities.
We have seen a nice property in Lefokastron which we have asked for information regarding availability and cost. Did you explore this village? Is it a nice area?
As we aren't going until Sept we have plenty of time to investigate before we make our decisions.

Yes, we spent some time in this coastal village. Very quiet and laid back, only one place we could see open to eat/drink in May although there were a couple of others. There are some good beaches on the coastal route north of Lefokastron which eventually leads you to the larger village of Afissos. I wrote a little on Lefokastron in restaurant tips.
Let me know where you decide to go, I'd be interested. Where will you fly to?

We had a lovely 2 week holiday in the Pelion a few years ago and I'd love to go back some time diy. We stayed (with Tapestry) in Kalamos which was perhaps a bit too sleepy and cut off even for us but we had a car, so explored lots of the peninsula. We often ate at Milina and would agreee that there or Horton would be good places to stay to explore. I also liked the look of Platanias at the end of the peninsula, a lovely laid back place with a handful of tavernas and 2 sandy beaches. If you are touring and not bothered about being based on the coast, why not stay at one of the lovely mountain villages like Tsangarada. We came across a lovely looking place called The Lost Unicorn which I later found in here http://www.pelion.co.uk/

I would suggest Milina or Horton as a good base to cover Pelion. See http://pelion.dreamofgreece.com

We spent 2 weeks in this region in 2004 and loved it. Its not too commercialised and most of the tourists are Greek. We were based in Ayios Ioannis on the west coast and stayed in the Karoulanis Hotel which is actually self catering apts. right on Papa Nero beach. We watched the dolphins from our balcony. I would not hesitate to reccommend this accommodation, it has a pool and airconditioning. It takes less than an hour to drive to Affisos and we stayed there for a couple of nights. Generally this side is more touristy. We managed to see most of the resorts and felt that some were just too quiet for us but great for days out. Dont miss the little train ride, there are some spectacular sights on this trip. This region is really unspoilt but if you need a shopping fix Volos is not far away. I have found some info on the pelion that may be of interest click here

A very interesting article but out of date as Tapestry no longer exist. Not sure whether anyone else has taken their properties on.

A nice reminisce as we visited all the places mentioned. I'm actually feeling envious as I would love to return to the area.

I'll be interested to hear your experiences of the Pelion area and of "Houses of Pelion", if you use them. I saw their web site when looking for information on the area and quite fancy using them sometime in the future.

Maria, I did a query on the internet about the Houses of Pelion and found a negative report which is why I did a query. I also posted on a few other forum sites. I haven't had any response at all.

My very limited experience of 'Houses of Pelion' isn't very positive. I phoned to provisionally book an accommodation and spoke to a representative. I asked for an email confirming costs and verification of facilities, this was on Tues 16th Jan and as of yet I haven't received a reply. Because of this we have decided not to use 'Houses of Pelion' as this is not a very professional response. However, if you do decide to give them a try let us know as we may try them in the future (we just want some positive feedback!).

We will be returning from our trip to Greece, and the Pelion region, early in October so I will post a report of our travels then.

Hi Gina

I've just checked and there is some accommodation on the Pelion on http://www.yourgreece.gr - I have used these (just once for Monemvassia) last year and had no problems with them. They have some interesting properties all over Greece.
