Hello
Has anyone been to Ikaria? We are looking at staying at the Hotel Cavos, if anyone can give me a little info about the island and hotel we would be grateful but either or would be equally well received.
Many thanks
Emma
I have been to Ikaria twice, once was about 15 years ago and in 2001(I think). Don't know that particular hotel, don't think it was built when I was there, I rented a room above one of the tavernas in Armenistis village, however it appears to be located just beyond the small quay. Essentially central to everything in Armenistis.
Armenistis is a classic backpacker haunt on Ikaria, as is nearby Nas beach to the west.
Ikaria is large and mountainous and not geared up to package tourism. A bit awkward for ferries as some call in at Ag.Kirikos and some to Evdilos. Bus services are very limited/non existant, sometimes there is one a day from Ag. Kirikos to Evdilos(ask in the kiosk in Ag. Kiriakos). A sort of shared taxi system operates before ferry departures, which can be difficult to ascertain, but ask around.
Troughing:
Restaurants were all pretty much standard greek island stuff. A simple grill restaurant on the right just before the 'main drag' with a small terrace overlooking the sea, lovely view and smiley service.
There is a very laid back place just near the 'boatyard' in Gialiskari, past the two beaches.
Several tavernas/rooms places on the valley above Nas beach to the west.
