Palma de Mallorca, is a lovely city and there are beaches nearby.
Also Madrid is lovely, went there last year and stayed in a lovely hotel with a outdoor pool.

Or Estoril or somewhere nearby - he could spend his days in Lisbon (just a tram ride away) and you could spend your days on the beach or by the hotel pool.

Good idea, or Cascais. As well as Lisbon to see there's Sintra which is linked to Cascais by regular Stagecoach bus and worth a day.

Mummy have you checked the prices for hotels in the Arc de Triomphe area - it's the stop before Barcelona? We were there last week for the day as we wanted to visit Barcelona Zoo and it's a lovely place. It has a replica of the Paris Arc with a long promonade that leads down to Parc de la Ciutadella. This is a lovely park and not only does it house the zoo at the very end but has lots to see in its own right.

We thought this area was lovely (Only 1 stop on the train to Barcelona). Beautiful buildings. Only problem is regarding pools in city hotels for this area

Speaking of Ciutadella - that's also the name of the original capital of Menorca and is a beautiful city full of mediveal streets with a beach so shouldn't imagine problems with hotel pools
