Mark, Botty, just think yourselves lucky you dont need a scooter. I am one of the unlucky people who have to use one . I know there are some inconsiderate users of them, but not as many inconsiderate people as the ones that walk around with their heads in the clouds and never look where they are going.I am one of the considerate users and more times than I can count I am the one that has to stop for people meandering as I go to pass them or the ones that walk straight across in front of me and dont even see me . They wouldn't walk across someone on a bike yet they do it to mobility scooter users, so will you please not generalise and lump us all together under the same banner.

I guess this will either soothe, or upset the previous commenters!

I agee with both. There are a number of people on mobility scooters who really don't look where they're going and expect everyone to get out of the way as they zoom along. However, I also agree that far too many people wander around with their minds in the clouds. The number of times in Tenerife have I been walking down the promendade to find families walking 4 or 5 abreast taking up the entire prom and not minding where they're going - bumping into people.

I like to think I was brought up properly and always try to watch where I am going, and it may be to do with percentages, but I think there are more rude abled people than those on mobility scooters. Let us all watch where we are going and have a lovely time in Tenerife

Just back from LC and shocked at the number of mobility scooters flying around - I bet only a handful actually need them.

As they are very quiet, you don't always hear them coming from behind and some of the drivers leave a lot to be desired. I saw one man - didnt looked like he needed one - try to overtake a lady from behind, she didnt know he was there and stepped to the side and was nearly knocked down. The man didnt apologise but started waving his arms around and having a go at her in German as if it was her fault!

Can't see why so many people go on holiday and suddenly contract walking difficulties!

Ramage..it is because there are mobility scooters now that disabled people can go on holiday, thats why you see them . As for people using them that dont need them I dont think they would pay the exhorbitant Tenerife prices for one if they were able to walk.they are about 215 euros for two weeks hire . I can walk...well more of a waddle, but I can't walk very far before the pain is unbearable, so I should stay home and vegitate according to you so that you can have the place scooter free...I dont think so !!!! If you read my post above you will see what I have to say about inconsiderate able bodied people walking around with their heads in the clouds As for the man in your post , how on earth could you tell he didn't need one, we dont go around with a sign on us telling people what we ail from.I think before you make any more sweeping statements you should consider what it's like having mobility problems and lets just hope it doesnt happen to you

Serena - I didnt say mobility scooters should be banned, in fact my Dad uses one in the UK due to his health. I just think some of the users should take more care when driving them down the paths as you cannot hear them and they go twice as fast as those people walking. I know of a couple of people whilst we were there said that have no particular walking problems and dont need one in the UK but took one out in Tenerife as they were a lot on offer around the town.

If people want to hire a scooter then they should, but some people arent used to riding them that is all.

Just come back from LC and I agree that there did seem to be a lot of scooters going at a fair old pace but just glad I don't need one, we found the lycra-clad cyclists more of a hazard as they seem to think they own the promenade and don't slow down for anyone! Is this turning into the "Grumpy old tourist" site - now there's an idea for a television programme....

I too agree that some users of mobility scooters don't seem to have a care in the world, and yes it is very unfortunate if you have to use one but at least I think they should be restricted to a walking pace so if an inconsiderate user did bump someone it wouldn't do as much harm.

And ramage, I too do think some people don't need them , just sit outside some of the restaurants and watch people jump of them , I know of a couple who only the husband needs one but the wife also hires one just to keep up with him

Katy, I dont know about grumpy tourist site, I think it's more have a go at mobility scooter users site.

When we were in Las Americas easter gone, I had problems with kids on those two wheeled motorised things you stand on[dont know what they're called] and kids on bikes ..teenage kids I mean. I was on a mobility scooter and they kept whizzing in and out around me . I am a considerate user and only go slow as hubby has to keep up with me and as I have one of my own at home I'm very proficient on one but anyone thats not so good on one would I'm sure, have had an accident with one of those two wheeled things .

Tenerife 2003 if you see me get off my scooter you will see a lady that really struggles to get off it .I can understand some elderly people hiring one to keep up with their partner as some elderly people walk very slow and wouldn't be
able to keep up even if the scooter was on a third of the speed which is what I travel at and mine only goes 4 miles per hour at full speed fully charged .

I'm sure it is the case that some mobility scooter users in overseas holiday resorts are inexperienced, because it may well be the first time that they have ever had an opportunity to use one. But that does not suggest that because they don't need one at home, then they don't need one abroad. Going on holiday to a disabled friendly resort may provide them with greater opportunities to get around than they might ever enjoy at home. Or perhaps they always have to use a car or public transport to get from A to B at home and so using a mobility scooter abroad gives them more freedom to go where they want when they want.

I don't think it is fair to assume either that because someone parks a mobility scooter and then seems fairly agile as they walk into a restaurant, that they are not sufficiently disabled or not in need of a scooter. It could well be that they are perfectly mobile for very short distances, but completely incapable of walking any longer distances. It's not for us to judge anyone's mobility problems, we should perhaps all just be thankful that we are better off than some.

Serena I see your point about partners might need one to keep up but as you rightly pointed out earlier at €215.00 there not cheap just to keep up. and your also right about the electric powered things the kids are on, they get up to a good speed and could do harm with them.

David I didn't say fairly agile I said jump off, big difference there, but the topic isn't about weather people need them or not it was actually about the increasing numbers and " whizzing about ", so to stay on topic yes I think the numbers have increased over the last two years and this is probably due to the wide availability these days.
