Word of warning hotel safes

Or not so safes as this case points out http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=15901&cid=26 this has been the subject of a few horror stories the last few years so beware HT`ers. They even had the cheek to blame fellow tourists for this :think A good tip is take some blue tack and put money tightly in a bag and stick it to the roof of the inside of the safe, they usually don`t see it there and take what is in front of them, this worked for a friend of mine although his camera and a gold chain went walkies.

No, but it should be named and shamed if possible. You don't expect to have your stuff nicked from a safety deposit box so it could only be by staff with a spare key (unless the guests inadvertantly left it unlocked that is). The Goans don't like their "own" being accused of theft and will always say that it must have been another tourist.

Take your OWN padlock - we do.

I remember a couple we once met losing a very nice camera (not at the Nizmar I hasten to add), they had put it under the table where they were sat having a meal and when they left they forgot to pick it up, needless to say it was gone on their return a little while later. The went to Calangute Police Station to report their loss so that they could claim on their insurance and the police refused to provide the necessary forms to fill in. The couple returned the next day and asked again, still the police refused, the lady then produced a couple of big cartons of cigarettes and offered them to the policeman...........they were suddenly able to register their loss and had the paperwork they needed....Funny that :think

When we stayed at the Sunshine Park in Candolim, we HAD to use our own padlocks as as they didn't supply them.

The safety deposit boxes were in a room behind Reception locked with a large padlock and you had to ask Reception for the key.

When we stayed in the Osborne a few years ago, the sold you a new substantial padlock and keys, still in it's box, as part of the safety box rental price, and at the end of your stay you kept the padlock. If however its different now, on Calangute high street, there's a little lane leads along the side of Romanos Opticians, and about 10yrds along is a locksmith which sells all sizes of padlocks and chains. After finding someone robbing us whilst we slept (they came up the drainpipe and through our open balcony doors) we started buying a length of chain and padlock so we could leave the balcony doors ajar but without enough room for anyone to enter. Simple solution - take travellers cheques!!!

I really do not understand why people take only cash. They must be asking for trouble.

What we do is take the bulk of our money in travellers cheques, and keep hold of our 'cash'.

We always ask for travellers cheques in small values, that way we do not have to change a £100 travellers cheque.

Although we do keep our passports in the safe, just hope no one steals those.

I have been reading about the somy resort and it seems we need our own padlock, plus one of their padlocks. This is great news.

Last season we stayed at the riverside guest house, and we had to ask for them to open the safe.
Nothing went missing though.

It is well worth spending a few quid for a decent padlock too Nicola, those Indian ones are next to useless, take a decent one from home.

Good idea to take very little cash.Got caught out at the Niamar a couple of years ago purely because I had not had time to bank my holiday pay before we left.

We both have Nationwide flex accounts andwe have scanned and emailed our passports and travel insurance to ourselves in case we need copies.

I only ever take a cheap watch and would not advise women to take any valuable jewelry.A sad world we live in and Goa is no longer immune.

Good idea FTV, ive already bought some locks for our suitcases, but i will buy another lock for the safe.

Papa - did you get something stolen? must have been horrible. Ive never had anything stolen from a hotel, but here in the UK my car window has been smashed a couple of times, they took a cd player the first time, and the second time they didnt take anything, just rooted through the glove box.

It is really annoying that people have the cheek to steal, and i bet the feeling is worse if it happens on holiday when your least expecting it.

Well it would be difficult to say stolen more like went missing.Purely my own fault.Had not bothered with a safety deposit box took about £150 out with us meaning to change it into rupees and ended up not bothering.After a night on the sherbert came back and dumped it on the table right the door.Got up next morning did not even bother checking the table and went to the beach.Needless to say it was not there when we got back.Could have been the roomboy could have been anyone passing as the room was getting cleaned.Top and bottom of it all was there was only one person to blame.Me for being a moron.Still look back on it today and think"you di*****d."

Anyway we live and learn.Now very little cash and safety deposit for passports and travel insurance.

When we stayed at the Highland they told us to buy a padlock from a small store just up the lane, however all their padlocks were exactly the same... with matching keys... :think
We got a friend at the shack to get us a good one, but we could see in the safe room just how many people had bought the matching padlocks.
