When I went to Rhodes a few years ago, I stayed in a really quiet area as far from the drinking-partying scene as I could - I just wanted a relaxing break! Anyway, a couple of times my friend and I would wander down the street from the hotel to a little local bar, where we'd drink with the bar staff from our hotel (who were from Poland, and the only people in the hotel near to our age!). Anyway, the bar would always stay open until we left, but one night a greek police officer came in and started yelling at the owner. He was fairly quickly placated, but he made sure the music was off and (I think) told the owner not to serve anymore drinks.
I was just wondering whether there are liscening hours in Rhodes or if anyone else has had a similar experience?

If the music was playing into the early hours then that would've been the problem, rather than late drinks. Most bars can only play music until 12/1 and then should 'officially' turn it off, many don't. They'll often have a soundproof door and somebody on the look out for passing police, when more often than not, the music stops for a minute or two, then carries on as normal!
I don't know of any bar with a set closing/kicking out time, they all seem to serve until the last customer leaves.

Ah, right! It was a little bewildering for two english girls, we thought we were going to be in trouble - not good on a first holiday without parentals! I must admit that as far as I remember, the police officer left, the owner shrugged and the music went back on, but without knowing the language, we didn't have a clue what had happened!
That's a good thing to remember if I go back though - the drinks were pretty cheap, so we did stay til 4am or so a few times - or until our money ran out! haha

we close at about 1:30-2 but that's because most people by then are either off in the clubs or wherever but there's loads of other bars that never close from mid-may onwards until late september, not even for 5 minutes all summer!
The complexities of the Greek licensing laws are so mental it's not even worth going into, including the law about music being played late at night,we get until 12:30 or 1 on some nights but then we just keep it on and the boss watches for the old bill and when he spots them kills the sound with a remote, standard practice in Faliraki really, harder to get away with in the quieter places though, but even if a bar has a 'closing time' on thier licence it's most likely the owner will either know the local police cheif personally or will just slip them a backhander once a week, that's if they even bother sayign anything.

When I was in Stegna a couple of years ago, we were told that there was a curfew for "amplified music" which had to be turned off at Midnight. But there were a couple of guys with acoustic guitars who would continue after midnight until the last drinker finished.
The last two years I've been to Lindos purely for the rock festival - what curfew???

Actually that isn't strictly true - the police still monitor the sound and will have a quiet word with anyone they consider playing too loud.
As for closing time - the bar we "adopted" stayed open and started serving food at 2am until about 8am!!
