Hi All,
Anyone want to hurl some suggestions at me for what to do on holiday in May '13? I'll be in Hong Kong for a friends wedding (to be honest, the wedding was the excuse I needed to make the leap and book a trip!). I'll be traveling alone. Flights are booked (relatively reasonable trip on Turkish Airlines for the right side of £500), but virtually everything else is ip for negotiation;
May 4th: Arrive in Hong Kong
May 6th: Wedding in Hong Kong

May 13th: Depart from Beijing
Obviously 4th - 6th will be in Hong Kong and maybe a trip over to Macau.
After that, I need to get from Hong Kong to Beijing sometime between the 7th and 13th of May '13. I'd originally thought about taking the train, but the closer I look at the visa situation, the more I think that this might be a problem to enter China by train? Anyone have any experience?
As a second choice, I see some reasonable (<£150) flights from HKG - PDG and PDG - PEK, which would allow me a night or two in Shanghai?
Is there anywhere else between HKG and PEK that I'd be silly to miss? I know that's a silly question, but I've only got about a week, so need to make the most of it.
As you can probably tell, I'm totally lost! Basically, I've got a completely open itinerary. Anyone have any suggestions for must-dos? I like traveling. I love flying, trains and airports, so would happily spend the week moving about. Am I best heading directly to Beijing as soon as possible or is Shanghai worth a look?
I'd really love any thoughts or advice.

With less than a week in country I wouldn't bother with the train from Hong Kong. Your idea of flying to Shanghai and Beijing seems about right, two days in Shanghai would allow you to see a fair amount and four days in Beijing would give you time to see the main sights, even enough time to take a day tour out to the Great Wall.
There are some interesting places not too far from Shanghai, Hangzou, Suzhou and maybe Wuxi but they would take far too much out of your already limited time in country and travelling through China can be somewhat frustrating with delays at times.
Main sites to see in Beijing are the Forbidden City with Tiananmen Square. The Temple of Heaven, The Summer Palace on Kunming Lake and of course the Great Wall. Try and visit a traditional Beijing Duck restaurant. You might find it helpful to book a 3 day packet of excursions for when you are in Beijing, you would most likely be picked up at your hotel. If you go out to the Wall do allow a full day as there are often bad traffic jams.
It's over 20 years since I was last in Shanghai and I expect it has changed somewhat but I do remember the
Yuyuan Garden and the Nanjing Road. I believe you can now take a cruise on the Huangpu River which will give you views of both old and modern Shanghai and do take a walk along the Bund.
