So do I - the customs people won't be able to taste it, as good Moslems aren't supposed to have alcohol in any form and my puddings are full of it .

In the suitcase, food is not allowed in your hand luggage unless it is baby food to be used on the journey or food for special dietary reasons , again needed for the journey.

Thanks very much for that Judith. I'd far rather put it in my case as I've never had my luggage searched (not that I ever carry anything 'dodgy') and that way I can protect the basin with clothes/towel etc., but I just wanted to be sure.

Incidentally, you say food is not allowed in hand luggage, but I've often taken the odd sandwich or buttered bun when I haven't booked a meal on the plane and there hasn't been a problem so far.

try wrapping it in bubble wrap too.....

You will be able to take it as hand luggage, restrictions on food were lifted a while back. Liquid restrictions still in place though.

You would be allowed to take it as hand luggage if you wished. Just depends if you want to carry the extra weight though!

Sorry, you are all correct, I must have been thinking about drinks, the rule on carrying food was relaxed some time ago. But as someone posted it may be better to pack in your case so as not to carry the weight round in your hand baggage. I live in Germany and usually around November every year if I visit the Uk I take one back with me. I will also get a list from expats living near by. I once took seven back with me. Luckily I can buy them at the Harrods store on Heathrow duty free so I don't have to fill my case up.

You spoil your friends Judith giving them Harrods puds. I simply mentioned on another site that I'd made all my puddings and an ex-pat bemoaned the fact that she couldn't get them in Tunisia so I promised to take one out to her ready for next Christmas. And before anyone asks, no, you can't place your orders.

Over the years I have made the puddings myself (the germans don't eat them, they don't know what they are missing) but am inclined to be lazy if I can buy one. My friends pay for the Harrods puddings themselves, they have to agree to pay the high price as I won't carry normal supermarket ones all the way back to the Airport from Nottingham (I get mine in Sainsburys). I've still got one in the cupboard, this conversation is making me hungry. I think we may be eating Christmas Pudding this week. Though it won't help my New Years diet.

We used to take out foodstuffs for our friends who lived abroad - usually favourites that they couldn't get where they were. Our local friendly grocer used to vacuum pack them for us and they always arrived in perfect condition. This was before any of the current regulations and we were never questioned about anything. We have taken some wierd and wonderful things abroad in our time.
