I might have just paddled over from Morocco in a canoe
To be perfectly honest with you I couldn't give two hoots what Thomsons or any other person in Great Britain knows.
Someone came on here asking advise about carrying passports on them at all times and was told that it is law here in Spain to have ID on you and that they should make a copy and keep that on them.
The object of these forums is to inform people of whatever they need to know.
If you want to give people the wrong advise by telling them you know the law and that it's absolute rubbish that ID isn't a legal requirement here in Spain then go ahead and do so but remember that there are those of us that do know the the law.
As far as the agreement that the Spanish goverment have with the British Foreign office goes ummmm tricky but I do know I've never seen a policeman with a list of British holiday makers.

I'll tell you what I'm due to go to the main Malaga station within the next couple of weeks (might go sooner now..lol) I will find out what is the general rule regarding British holiday makers and ID..
sorry I started all this aggro. I thought it was a simple question and I think I have got my answer as well so thanks everyone.
I wouldn't say it was aggro..lol.. It's just Sanji knows what she knows and I know what I know We just need to come to some agreement on what we advise people on here.
Deffo agree though that you don't carry your passports on you..
Deffo agree though that you don't carry your passports on you..
The original question was..."I read somewhere that you have to carry your passport around with you on the CDS".
Now we all agree that you shouldn't....
The TO's and the Foreign Office tell you not too, so the information read by the poster is complete rubbish
We agree it is the Spanish law to carry ID...which BTW I never said it wasn't if you care to read back.... but no one has told me why tourists are still being advised to keep their passport in the safe if it is the law to carry ID or insisting that they carry a laminated copy.
I would have thought that the major TO's and the FO would know the law and the requirements of the various countries and it's no use saying who gives a toss about TO's because obviously Spain gives a toss, they are happy to have us in their country to boost their economy.
I carry a laminated copy, but think of the millions of tourists who have been to Spain and don't have a copy or better still have never been asked to make one, by either the TO's or the Foreign Office.
Anyway, I don't need this aggro, I'm on holiday in Spain at the moment.
And the next time I apologise to someone who obviously has no intentions of accepting my apology....it will be the one and only time.

Absolute rubbish, it is not a legal requirement to carry ID, unless you are Spanish, as the Spanish have ID cards. I'm not quite sure about residents........."
This is getting ridiculous Admins. This thread should have been locked several days ago.

Mike, I can assure that the decision of locking topics isn't taken easily by Admin.
In most circumstances we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
I had hoped that the topic would get back to an even keel - but it appears that this is impossible and once again we are just going around in circles.
Unfortunately yet another topic locked!
