I can thoroughly recommend Albufeira, and it sounds as though you would be happier staying near the Old Town. Lots of restaurants, some with fabulous sea views, cobbled streets, (ex)fishermen's cottages in little alleys, beaches all along the coast. Because of its central position in the Algarve, Albufeira is a good choice if you want to explore in each direction.
