Never been to the North but why don't you try South but a bit further up oever the Sal. I've just got back from 2 weeks in Cavelossim. Its busy but not too much, great beaches that aren't packed with shacks. You can walk between them and actually find quiet stretches. Everything from a basic guest house to a 4* hotel.

Its also a good base (we went on a scooter to Agonda took about 1hr) T
Try Mobor Resort, Gaffinos, Mikes Place to name a few
