We are thinking about going to Las Vegas next year with our 17 year old son but are a little concerned if he is old enough to go into the casinos and bars with us, so we would be very gratefull if anyone could give us some imformation.
many thanks

He will not be allowed in bars. He will be allowed to walk through the casinos, but not allowed to stop and watch you play a machine. If he looks much older than his years, you may get away with him watching you play a machine or two. Any bars will want ID to let him in even if he is going to have a soft drink. They tend to be strict because a violation can make them lose their license.
I have never been to Vegas with anyone under 21, but have seen lots of people asked for ID who look much older than that.
Others may have different advice, but the 21 year limit seems to be strongly adhered to.

Yeah, the reason why most people get carded (asked for ID) in the US has nothing to do with how old they look. It's because, to purcahse alcohol, everybody is meant to be asked for ID (in practise not everyone is, though). If, say, a bar got stung by the cops and somebody did not have their ID but they were drinking, that means either the bar didn't ask for ID or they did ask for ID but the person wasn't able to present it. That's where the legal side of things comes into play and, as pebbles says, it's how a bar can lose its license. So, it's not enough to be 21 in order to drink... you have to be able to PROVE you are 21. It's an interesting system but it seems to work quite well.
yup, in all honesty, a teen may not have the best time in Vegas...........it's really an adults playground

Not much fun for a 17 yo in Vegas and it will annoy them to be treated the same as a 7 yo. There are plenty of other things to do, but none involve gambling or visiting bars. Best to wait until he is 21.

I would imagine that 17 must be the worst age to be in Vegas. Plenty for the over 21s and what is there for kids is really aimed at the little ones.
What do you need to prove your age that will be accepted for ID?
