Hi Darren,
I received a message this morining from a British friend that works/lives our in Hurghada, who has advised me that Thomson, Monarch and Jet2 airlines have stopped flying into Hurghada, from what I can gather due to fuel shortages. Do you have any knowledge of this?
Regards,
Pat
Qman wrote:Thanks for the reply Darren. I enjoyed the flight on the 737 last year, I had extra legroom, but my favorite is the 757. The takeoffs from small Greek airports are fantastic, a real push in the back! I would love to take off from Skiathos on a 757, the runway is very short. Last time I went to Skiathos it was in a 737-300 which had to land and refuel at Thesalonica.
I don't think the runway at Skiathos is wide enough for a B757.
Does anyone know where I can find online, what I am likely to pay in extra charges if I want to purchase an extra 20kg of hold baggage.
20kg is a lot, and they will probably charge you a lot. They normally charge about £25 or £30 for 5kg depending on where you are flying to.
Welcome onboard

What were you told about your flights? If you were notified of a change, I would assume it's a change to a short haul aircraft.
Darren
Just that the aircraft was in for service, and that there would be no premium class available. Also seats
allocated at airport. Cheers S/MICK
Actually 20kg isn't a lot when you take a full set of dive kit. I know I can phone then but last time I got the incorrect information so I wanted to see something in writing.
Sorry to bug you again .....
As per my message earlier, do you have any knowledge of Thomson, Monarch and Jet2 cancelling flights into Hurghada?
Regards,
Pat
Sorry, you didn't say you were taking diving kit, I though it was just excess luggage.
You would have to phone to book and pay for it, so just ask them at the beginning of the conversation.
I don't know anything but their websites say flights are as usual.
I do know people that had holidays booked with Jet2 (one flying out in March and Oct and the other in Sept) and both received calls yesterday from the airline to say that their flights were cancelled. Also received a message from a British friend who lives/works in Hurghada, and told me this morning that Thomson, Monarch and Jet2 have cancelled flights to Hurghada. Just seems to be so many rumours flying around at the moment, you don't know what to believe!!!
Just thought that perhaps Darren might have some information regarding the above.
Regards,
Pat
Yes, Darren may know more. As you say, rumours abound!
I've not heard anything re: Hurghada, Tour operators cannot just cancel flights like BA/Virgin or BMI and reroute them, they have a responsibility to bring those abroad home so the aircraft would still need to fly out to Hurghada to bring those abroad home, thus negating the reason to cancel the flight in the first place. If fuel is a problem they will just operate via another airport on the inbound leg, similar to what happened in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic a few weeks ago, all flights went home via Jamaica.
BY-TOM-AMM-FCA,
As in my previous post then, a change from a long haul to a short haul 76W. You'll find lots of aircraft infornmtion on our What Aircraft? guide (link below).
Darren
20kg is not much at all when taking diving gear, my camera housing is 8kg alone! Luggage details and how to purchase extra allowance is all on Thomson Airways website. I know it's better to use your own equipment in terms af familiarity and maintenance, but I find it easier and often cheaper these days just to hire equipment in resort. On production of your c-card at check-in, you'll get 5kg of extra hold allowance free of charge (divers allowance). Airlines are cutting down on weight allowance to save fuel (costs) and meet their environmental targets, hence all the reductions and restrictions on baggage these days.
Darren
I wasn't around last night, was at a birthday party

Darren
Now that I know I can get my head around the fact that I am going to be squashed in for
9 hours. At least were going on holiday, better than work
Thanks again for info cheers Sp/MICK
I've been across the pond on them many times, they aren't as bad as you imagine. Bear in mind, it was only from May 2008 that the newer generation interiors were introduced. The what are now short haul aircraft were the norm on long haul up to then (FCA from 2005). The pairs of seats by the windows are better in my opinion as you get the impression of having more room, although you don't in reality. You'll still have seat back IFE, subject to the specific aircraft on the day, it's just less seat pitch. It's only for 9 hours, it's the bit between the flights that's the best part and as you say, beats working!
Darren
Thanks for replying.
Just received a further message from my friend in Hurghada regarding Thomson, Monarch and Jet2 airlines which reads:
"Last 2 flights were Friday. Monarch have their guests on Easyjet as do Thomson. Jet2 are using Thomas Cook at present"
Seems holiday makers are still getting out to Hurghada but being switched to different airlines?
Regards,
Pat
