Barkes,

I knew you were going to ask that! As your flight doesn't commence until April, I don't know for sure at the moment. It's normally an ex-FCA though.

Current IFE listings are linked at the bottom of the Thomson Airways section of our What Aircraft? guide (link below). This is updated every 2 months when it is released. The current listing is Jan / Feb. I'll update it once the March / April is known.

Darren, looking for some urgent help! We are currently in the DomRep due to fly back to Manchester tomorrow on TOM 105. We were told there would be a long delay due to problems with today's flight to Cancun, however I see on Manchester airports site that the outbound tomorrow to Punta Cana TOM104 is showing as cancelled. Any idea what's going on and when we can expect to fly home?

It's due to depart MAN at 14:45. Technical problems caused the delay

cazzholly,

I beleive there's a technical problem with an aircraft. The flight isn't cancelled, it's been rescheduled. The new ETD is 14:45 tomorrow. If I hear anything else, I'll let you know. The outbound flight is going to be late departing, hence the delay to your inbound flight. I'm sure you'll be well catered for and be spending an extra afternoon in your hotel so shouldn't be all that bad. Think of those waiting to fly out, it's a long wait at the airport.

Todays Thomson flight back from Goa is showing up as cancelled on LGW site - any idea why?

These technical problems seem to happen on a regular basis. I was 24 hours late departing Cancun in December, causing loss of wages. I am a little concerned as I would like to book to go back to Mexico in September.

Is there a reason for these ongoing problems.

Old planes, hence the order for the new Dreamliners due in January next year.

Technical problems happen from time to time. Aircraft are incredably complex machines and even minor issues can't be overlooked. It's not like you can pull to the side of the road and call the AA / RAC at 37,000ft mid-atlantic.

Age is not a major factor due to the high level of maintenance. Even new aircraft have technical problems, just look at the A380.

Sorry Darren, I know you demonstrate significant technical knowledge about aircraft on this site and you do help lots of folk. (Me included, a number of times - thanks)

However I do have to differ. The Thomson 767 aircraft ARE getting old, and they DO seem to be suffering more and more unreliability issues. Thomson seem to be having a pretty bad winter season this year.
I came back late from Punta Cana recently - because of Thomson aircraft breakdowns they actually had to charter an emergency high capacity (cramped) 767 from their arch rivals Thomas Cook. That has to mean Thomson really were in trouble.

I agree the A380 had some teething design problems - like an engine explosion midflight - but the pilot later commented on just how wonderful that aircraft was, keeping flying regardless. It isn't having old age problems just yet.

The old 767's used by Thomson are past their best, though hopefully keeping flying a while yet, since I'm on one next weekend and again in the summer.
It's just a real pain for folk who depend on the schedules being met that they will get home on time.

PS - any idea why TOM083 back from Goa to Gatwick has been cancelled today?
It doesn't look like TUI have killed off all the Goa midweek flights yet since they are accepting bookings for future ones. Is it another broken 767 this week?

It was a problem where they came from rather than with TOM long hard service down in Asia with who knows what maintenance doesn't give the best start in fact this is why you will find G-OOAN has one of the better records of the fleet not that it escapes the odd problem

BEfreeTODAY - you worry me!
I had assumed that they were all much the same, just a little elderly - I can understand, I remember the Beatles.

However your comment suggests that previous usage of aircraft in "hard service" areas like Asia is a factor in future reliability.
I will look at plane registration numbers more carefully in future, though I don't think it will stop me boarding.
Probably just increase the inflight alcohol consumption.

ukbill,

I didn't say they weren't getting on a bit, just that it wasn't the major factor. If you've ever seen an aircraft go through a D-check, where the airframe is pretty much stripped to components, the aircraft comes back after several weeks not too far from factory fresh. Thomson aren't the only airline to suffer technical issues, Qantas are going through a spate of back luck too at the moment for example. All I meant was the age of TOM's aircraft isn't the over-riding reason for reliability issues. Of course it's a factor, but aircraft suffer technical issues for all sorts of reasons and old or new, it's just a fact of running an airline.
