I did a tour of the Canadian Rockies in August 2004 and unfortunately it rained almost every day. We arrived on the day after a heatwave had ended and the next three weeks were damp, to say the least. I think the weather is very unpredictable, just like the UK. It was never really cold and we did have the odd sunny day and although good weather would have been preferred it didn't spoil our enjoyment of what is a beautiful country. We didn't go all the way up to Alaska but just caught a boat down the inside passage from Prince Rupert to Vancouver Island, again a lot of rain but we did see whales. We had our rain jackets and a fleece with us but the warm underwear stayed at home as it never was that cold. Take the same as you would for a holiday in the UK. A bit of everything and you should be OK. Do take your shorts.
We watched cruise boats leaving Vancouver for the trip up to Alaska, the boats looked very luxurious.
