We're thinking of going to Portugal in April during the school Easter holidays (around 7th-21st) but are concerned that it won't be warm enough for sunbathing and also that the swimming pools will be freezing cold! The weather is probably a bit hit and miss this time of the year, but I just wanted to know if the guide of around 20 degrees is about right, in which case I don't think it will be warm enough.
We love Portugal, particularly Vilamoura and would be staying either there or Albufiera, i.e. not too far from the airport.
We have two boys, 9 and 13, both sports mad, particularly football and golf (mini), and we would like to find a complex that has a variety of activities for the kids as well.
As well as the weather question if anyone is able to give me some good family accommodation recommendations (preferably 4* but would look at good 3*), i.e. apartments with the option of 2 bedrooms in a central location with a heated pool (!) in either Vilamoura or Albufiera, it would be very much appreciated. I don't generally use the big tour operators but prefer to book flights and accommodation independently, which I usually find more cost effective.
Also, does anyone happen to know the approx taxi fare from Faro to Albufiera?
Very many thanks in advance.
Hi Jan,Donnie MacRae here from Bridge of Allan,Stirling. My Family and myself have been visiting Portugal for the last 5 years,4 times at the new year where the temp. was roughly 60 degrees teeshirt weather, but not for the locals they had their anoraks on and were looking at us as if we were daft, but we didn't mind.We stayed at the Algarve casino hotel in Pia De Rocha. which was really good.In the winter we could not use the pool as it was very cold,a few brave hearts ventured into the pool including my 11 year old son but they did not stay long.We found out from the hotel reception that we could go along the road (100mtrs.) to the Jupitor hotel which had a heated pool with all the facilities which only cost 3eu.and you could stay in the pool for as long as you wish, also it was not very busy sometimes we had the pool to ourselves.I would recommennd the Jupitor or the Algarve Casino.
Regards Donnie.

Easter is very early this year, 23rd march. Unheated pools maybe warm enough if you don't mind them being on cool side. I've been to Algarve in february and been in t shirt and shorts during the day but also ahd days when long sleeves and triusers have been needed. The water parks will be open by then.
Thank you for your replies. I think we have concluded that April won't be warm enough, especially as our boys like to spend most of the day round the pool, which I don't think would bother them too much but nothing's worse than shivering on a sunbed!
I think we'll play safe and leave it until mid-end August. Thanks again.

Just to add to this, we went in April for east a couple of years ago. We rented a villa on the top of a hill overlooking the marina, was next to the windmill apartments. The pool was cold but only because off how high up we were. It was very warm once you got down a bit into the town. If you are looking for it to be definitely hot i would suggest you got after April though.
Hi
I'm off to Alvor on Saturday!!
I've been checking the 15 day forcast on Accuweather
For the week in Faro it looks mainly Sunny with an average temp of about 20cbut when I check Alvor the average temp for the week is only about 14c!?!
Does anyone know if it is normal for Alvor to be so much cooler than Faro? It's not that far along the road?
May have to pack my wooly jumpers!

Hi Briar
Sounds like you has a good time. What a great way to travel, no worring about hoe much your luggage weighs. I'm sure my dog would have loved it too!
We will have a good time regardless of the weather, all the great food and wine.
I just can't understand why the termps in Faro look to be so much warmer that Alvor! I'll still pack my high factor sun lotion just incase!

Yes we are self catering. Flying with easy jet and staying at the Casa de Alvor. Hope its ok, I could only find 1 review on here but it was positive.
We stayed at Prai de Vau last year and visited Alvor a couple of evenings. I think I remember where the lifeboat is, will try it this time! There certainly seems to be plently of retuarants to choose from!
didn't get round to visiting the beach at Alvor last time so that will be good!
thanks for the reply, I've got my sun tan lotion packed and my cardi!

Generally speaking the Eastern Algarve is slightly hotter than the Western Algarve, also the Eastern Algarve is less windy as it is more protected.
I holidayed the same two weeks, two years running. The first year staying at Praia de Luz in the west and the following year at Cabanas in the east, we had consistently higher temperatures in Cabanas in the east.
Have a lovely time in Alvor, I have visited a couple of times it's a great place.
