We visit Malta every February from Cyprus for a little less than a week, so couldn't really tell you where the best place would be for a summer holiday. We stay in Bugibba as we go to visit my parents whilst they are there on holiday for a month.

Malta isn't my favourite place but it always has a familiar feel as the driving is on the same side of the road as Cyprus and UK, where we are orginally from. The people are friendly and to eat and drink out is very reasonable. It is "growing" on me - slowly, and next February we will be staying in Qawra for a change...

As for rooms, maybe you could find an aparthotel complex that has a combination of hotel rooms and apartments?

You may be better in a 1 bedroom apartment so your elder son would not have to sleep with you and hubby but you would still have all the facilities that staying a hotel has to offer. It's not always necessary to go self-catering as some complexes allow you to book half board / All Inclusive or meal packages prior to travelling or when you arrive.
