GROTTY HOTEL
4 years 9 months ago
My stay in this hotel spoilt an otherwise good holiday. Our double room was small with not enough room for two people to pass each other. The storage for clothing was inadequate and consisted of a diy wardrobe in a recess, shelves with a door and two small three drawer bedside units that did not match. There were only 3 electric sockets and 1 bedside lamp. The bathroom was minute less than 4 foot by 4 foot with a dirty shower cubicle (hair still found the waste trap) a tiny triangular sink that you couldn't reach to use properly because the shower doors and the wall were so close. The toilet was acceptable though again not sparkling. The dining arrangements were not great. The hotel is used by National travel and guests are sat together. We had booked and travelled individually and initially were expected to sit with the coach party.

Evening meals were poor example, cold ham, fried egg frozen chips and peas. Followed by a hot dessert or cheesecake or ice cream. The vegetarian option was cauliflower cheese, No potatoes or other veg. Another night was sausage and mash. Good job there was a decent chippy just along the prom. The cooked breakfast wasn't bad. Though the arrangements for cereals and teas and coffees was chaotic due to the poor layout. There was no residents lounge with comfy chairs. If you wanted to sit it was either in the public bar on mostly hard wooden seats or outside on the pavement on a handful of garden chairs. One lift serviced about 90 rooms.

Cleanliness didn't seem to be a priority, although we had clean towels everyday there was little evidence that the bathroom had been cleaned and the bedroom floor was not vacuumed once during our six night stay. As for the toilets in the public area: not too be recommended. Neither the good views free parking or decent towels would make me want to stay at this hotel ever again.

Very compact

Worst hotel experience of my life. We had to go down one flight then up a flight to reach our room. The room was fine, but en-suite was unbelievably "compact". Only 17" space to approach 10" wash basin; like a caravan. You had to step in backwards to sit on the toilet.

Food was occasionally fine if you got served, but it was hit and miss and much was awful. We decided to forego coffee after our meal after waiting half an hour with no result. Catering staff were unhelpful.

We needed to leave at 7:30 a.m. to catch the ferry but they refused to let us in for breakfast till 7:00. Had to settle for fruit juice and toast which didn't involve the waiters.
We won’t be using this hotel again.

the hotel was in a great position right across from the sea,it was clean and tidy but could have done with some redecorating in places, compliments to the chef and kitchen staff, the food was excellent,a good selection and always hot.
the hotel couldnt have been in a better location.
our waiter was Chris he gets an a* nothing was too much trouble for him,i dont like meat pie so he brought me chicken, and he always had a smile.
the ladies on reception were very friendly and helpful with information on buses and places to visit.
the entertainment was fine for us.we enjoyed it,
will definately go again if we can have a sea view next time.

This hotel is on the seafront and it is worth asking for a room with a sea view as I understand the other rooms at the back were smaller than these and didn't have good outlook. The entertainment was ok if you are over 70 but we did get to have a dance one night to some 80's music! The hotel was well kept up to, I think it may have been refurbished, they are open 11 months of the year and usually close in January. The food was excellent, 4 course breakfast and evening meal with coffee and choices. The only downside is the evening meal was too early for me at 6:30 p.m. strict. When you are out all day I don't like to have to rush back for dinner, I felt it shortened my days. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. The restaurant staff were very efficient and friendly. By the time we got back from breakfast the beds had already been made up and the rest of the cleaning completed when we went out for the day. We will definately go back to this hotel.
