I used to visit the oktoberfest yearly. I have not been for around 10 years now and am thinking of going back again this year. A big tip if you are looking to cut cost as much as posible is to book into your hotel a couple of days before th oktoberfest starts.
All Munich hotels charge a trade fair supplement which means that the cost of rooms can easily double during Oktoberfest. If you plan your arrival a day or two before the start of Oktoberfest you can usually avoid the supplement.
There is a company which specialises in coach and caming trips to Oktoberfest too and their prices start at around £180 for a five day trip. They also do backpacker hostels for around £225 for 5 days. I will try and search out the web address for this firm and get back to you.
If you are doing your own flight and hotel booking, as alsacienne says, book early.
You will love Oktoberfest whatever you choose. Fantastic atmosphere!
