Good question.

See HERE

According to the Dept of Health website you can't use a European Health Insurance Card in Bulgaria, and have to produce UK passport and NHS medical card.

Money appears to be the key factor in obtaining satisfactory medical care, whether you are a Bulgarian national or a foreign tourist.

Make sure that you have adequate medical insurance cover as the majority of health services are privatised.

I spoke to an acquaintance today, who suffered major injuries in a road traffic accident in Bulgaria last year - he has been billed 20,000 Leva for the initial emergency hospitalisation & treatment, subsequent operations have brought (and will bring) much higher charges. His Bulgarian car insurance company have, allegedly, failed to settle any of these bills. :(
