My sons skied with the school twice each . expensive business

the essentials will be and ive always found TK max a good place to start

a pair of ski socks for each day - so probably 6 pairs.

2 pairs themal long johns
4 thermal vests

both of these you can buy in Primark . they wash up great and best of all - cheap

next comes the middle layer

so I would suggest either polo neck type or zip up at the neck microfibre fleece specially made for sking/walking . TK maxx have plenty. a couple should be fine .

Jacket and salopettes you can hire . the school will probably arrange this but again you could maybe pick them up cheaply from TK maxx (others may be able to suggest other outlets) for not a lot more than the cost to hire . If he doesnt go again you can resell them on ebay for more than you paid originally . I have on many occasions.

Then he will need ski Gloves, goggles ,(dont bother with sunglasses unless he already has some) and a hat . The ones with the plaits down the side are great . also get him some "compeed" blister plasters and some sunblock and lipseal.

I think thats it . No need to buy expensive and beg or borrow as much as you can.

Hi, dunno if this is helpful but we found that the very small tins of vaseline with sun block are great for lips etc in the sun / extreme cold --- dont freeze and are really handy to have in your pocket ! Make sure the sunblock is not water based.

May be worth thinking about footwear when he's not skiing --- a good pair of snow boots are useful

Personally I'd still get the sun glasses as it can be very bright down in the lower slopes / towns if there is a lot of snow and sun. We got relatively cheap pairs from Millets for about £40 and if you dont use them much they pass for good sunglasses. At the end of teh day eyes are too precious to mess around with.

The other things we found useful were neck gaiters I think they're called. They're brill. It is also good to get a balaclava --- again Millets do a cheap range.

We buy the vast majority of our ski wear from TK Maxx, they have a large range at cheap prices. (We go most years and have 4 kids so regularly need to buy new stuff).

Others who replied have pretty well summed up what you need, but I'll add that from my experience hiring ski wear for a week isn't significantly cheaper than buying from somewhere like TK, and remember that a ski coat doesn't just have to be for skiing, it can also be worn for the rest of the winter.

As for general clothing/footwear for when not skiing, simply ask yourself what he would wear tomorrow if it were snowing and he had to nip out somewhere. Nothing special needed, just normal winter clothes.

I taught skiing in Austria and Germany for a few years and would agree with most of what has been advised in previous posts but would say it is important to have sun glasses or goggles. If it's very sunny the glare from the snow can be overpowering and can result in at the very least a very bad headache and on some occasions eye damage and though rare temporary snow blindness.
