If you're planning to use the subway a lot, I'd recommend buying a Metrocard. We were in New York over NYE and we got a '7-day Unlimited Ride Metrocard' for $24 each. Alternatively, you can buy a '1-day Fun Pass' for $7.

We found the subway a little confusing to start off with - it's not as straightforward as the London Underground - BUT the locals were really helpful and always pointed us in the right direction if we looked lost, so don't be afraid to ask if you're not sure if you're on the right platform!
