WHich non-casino hotels were you thinking of? I can't think of any that are on the strip, unless there are any at the very far south end of the strip, so it could cost you a fortune in taxis getting to the strip if that's what you want to do.

If you do decide on a casino hotel, it is best to monitor their prices on their websites bearing in mind that the prices are high the further out you book and come down 2-3 months before arrival date.

Also monitor FAT WALLET where special offers are posted. Many of these require a player's card either to book or at check in, but you could sign up for one on arrival before going to the check in desk.

Thats exactly the sort of thing I was hopin to find out - I didnt realise the bit about the location and taxi costs so it sounds like you save moneyon the room but the spend it on cabs?

And then you dont get all the glitz of being in the themed hotel either, presumably?

I would recommend a hotel on the strip, especially for a first time visitor. There is previous discussion about Vegas hotels in this forum if you either look down the main page or do a search. I think one is called Good Vegas Hotel Deals.
