Awesome Experience with my family
11 years 2 months ago
Lets write my review as I experienced

Note: I booked and traveled in Deck 11 balcony class cabin.

1.Enjoy the welcome drink at the time of departure.
2.Dress casual since there is no restrictions in dresses.
3.Buy proper swimsuits if you want to enjoy swimming pool/Jacuzzi.
4.Enjoy all the free shows and they are of high class/quality. Avoid Nikita (adult) show nothing much and is very over hyped.
5.Book shore excursions in advance or early to avoid non availability.
6.All restaurants are awesome but I personally feel Belle Vista & Palazzo are the best. Mediterranean Buffet foods are good but crowds are not :) I had only breakfast 1 day in my 4 days on board. BBQ party in upper deck was very enjoyable.
7.For Gala dinner select Belle Vista IMHO.
8.Balcony is the best place as choice compared to other type of cabins. Enjoy 300 SG credits.
9. Crews are excellent and helpful.

The SSV is of an impressive size, and that's the problem. This is a mass market cruise experience, with very low grade food, mediocre entertainment but high cost per experience. To be fair, I think I give staff a 9/10 for their dedication but the tools to serve with were poor.

1. When we boarded the ship with 3 kids, the first hostess that met us, instead of showing us the way up to our cabin, pestered us to buy wine with our room credits.

2. This was a "Sponge Bob" cruise, which of the 4 days (3nights), we had a whole 20 minutes of SB during a breakfast which we had to top-up $10 X 3 kids for exclusivity, one jelly fish hunt, one other event and one 30mins stage show. That's all. In all SB and Patrick appeared may be 45mins. They had youths in orange Nickelodeon running those simple games.

3. Food at the Mediterranean buffet restaurant, was of poor grade. 3 lines of the same 5 items and one vegetarian line. Breakfast for the 4 days had little variation. If you want better food, they are chargeable.

4. Child care and Playground. I would think the management would be so kind to provide a free playground for kids to spend time. But No, they had a Pay-per-hour playground with their own child minders. Everything is chargeable. Which I think it is common to have a simple child proof playground for patron access.

5. Children's Arcade. The games at the arcade are old and out dated. But charges are at update on-shore Singapore rates of $1.50 and $2.00 per game. Some old games from five year ago were being offered. One set of Wii and One set of Kinect. I think SSV need to improve this.

6. Sleep Vibrations. Not sure why, but the vibrations from the engine on the first two nights, made it difficult to sleep. Not sure if other cruise ships have the same problem.

7. Off-loading luggage. Baggage claims at the Habourfront cruise centre was a chaotic nightmare. Everything was all over the place. People rushing across you all over. This certainly needs improvement

8. This seems to be a bargain cruise for the mass market so do expect a little more "kia-su" and crude foreign passengers on the ship who are over enthusiastic on the buffet line, the ever so frequent elevator "rush-ins" and no respect for personal space.

I paid SGD5,700 for 2 Balcony class cabins for 3 adults and 3 young kids (under 9) and my overall rating for it was a 3/10. As compared to the 4/3 nights HKG Disneyland trip (Air-fare + Disneyland Hotel) at SGD$6500 (6 adults + 6 kids) the difference was heaven and hell. This did not do justice to the Nickelodeon brand at all. I don't think I will be coming back to the SSV anytime soon.

I think this is a ship for gamblers, budget honeymooners and retirees. My sympathies to Japanese tourists who paid a premium for the experience. In summary not a recommended choice for a family with children (young or teens). Adults traveling, gamblers and retirees will find this more purposeful. Lots of patience and a relaxed mind is needed.

One commendation for the SSV's staff and crew of who has the patience and high tolerance, given the task and the tools they have.

Travelled with my family for fun. But it was as hopeless as one can imagine. The food was horrible . For 2 nites my son had to had only biscuits in the room as the food the cruise served was too low grade.

The staff was very rude to indians and i can say they were racist. The behaviour with Indians was like we indians are 2nd class citizens.

Would advise indians who has some sort of national pride not to travel in star cruise ever.

Have been on Gemini and expected the same - not even close. Food was poor and not a great selection. Buffet was like a canteen at a prison - with plastic trays that you slop food into sections. The Bella vista room was better - but not great. Too many people caused a lot of lining up. Staff coped but only just. Other passangers were mainly from India. Very rude and sleazy - even taking pics of other womens in swimwear. Would never do this or recommend to any one.

This was our first cruise and it was really wonderful. A beautiful ship, lovely friendly and caring staff and fantastic food and entertainment. The optional trips we good, we especially enjoyed the trip to Malacca it was worth the full 11 hour day.
The only problem we had and it was a problem was most of the other travellers were from India. They were very rude and pushy and kept taking photos of young girls!
Unfortunately they were an issue and before we ever cruise again, we will check what nationality that the majority of passengers is made up of.
No fault of course with the ship...just the passengers.

Interior cabins are basic, we had a balcony hut which is very small size. Carnival standard huts are double the size of the cabins on the Virgo. If you are European you do not fit into the standard beds.

Cabin was not cleaned as we expected to be cleaned. Buffet food was not impressive, also the gala night was not like the big cruise ships. Mostly Asians board the ship, night life spirit is low, the Asian families go early to bed. If you are looking for having a lot of fun at night you have to take Carnival in the Caribbean. The ports of calls are interesting. We disembarked ship in Malacca which they do not promote, if you do you can take cheap express bus to KL for US3 so you can board the ship again in KL.

If you are with kids and family this cruise is fine, if you are a couple and want to have night life and fun than you have to look for a fun boat.

We sailed on Superstar Virgo from Singapore - Penang - Phuket - Singapore (3 nights but 4 good days) and had a wonderful time. It was our first ever cruise apart from my time spent in the Merchant Navy travelling on cargo ships. The dtails outlined by Mr Franklin in his review are all pretty accurate although I feel he was a little harsh about the standard of food. We found that the choice of 8 restaurants offered something for every taste and we thoroughly enjoyed what we had to eat. We had a Balcony Class cabin on Deck 11 and it had everything you would expect in a 4 star hotel. Looking into some of the inboard cabins while the staff were cleaning would recommend anyone to take a balcony cabin if they can afford it. The other cabins were equally as nice but the lack of a window or balcony made them appear very dark. Prices onboard for drinks were very reasonable with bottles of wine starting at Sing$22. Beer was Sing$5.50 per glass. All these prices do not include the 15% service charge but because of the service charge there is a 'No Tipping' policy onboard unlike most cruise ships. We fully intend to cruise on this ship again in the near future and can recommend it.

The Superstar Virgo is a well run vessel with a multinational crew mainly drawn from SE Asia.
It is clean and comfortable and I recommend an Outside Stateroom (Balcony Class) as it gives you Dining privilegies as well.
Everything on board is cashless and all bills are charged through an Access Card which is your Room Key, Passport and Charge Card.
With Balcony Class you get a $200SgD per person Meal Allowance built in and this can be used for all Food and drinks not taken in the 3 Main Dining and Bar areas per person. All shopping onboard including cigarettes etc are separate but still charged through the card and you are billed at the end of your cruise prior to disembarkation.
The Entertaiment on board is geared to the Asian market and is a bit quaint with echoes of Butlins in the 60's about it.
The Cabarets and Shows are reasonable.
My wife and I were not impressed by the Gala Dinner with is heralded as the great event of the voyage and we found very disappointing, although on a later visit to the same restaurant, the food was very good.
The Shore Excursions were good, but if you go to Phuket wear trainers as you will need them to help you escape from the various souvenier sellers and hawkers about including Wang Telang, a very upmarket jewellers who do not take no for an answer and follow you around the store trying to sell you everything.
All prices onboard include a 10% service charge and a 5% Government sales tax.
You cannot buy Duty Free Cigarettes for consumption in Singapore and you will be fined a $1000 SGD if you have more than 20 on you at the time of disembarking.
The Ships Staff were friendly and courteous although in some cases it felt a bit forced particularly with the Entertainments Director who adopted an American approach which jarred a bit.
As this was our first cruise we were happy with the service we enjoyed but we would not sail with this company again because of the little things.
