My Family and I didn't ask enough questions and ended our first days safari having to take refuge in a Park Ranger Staion about 8 KM. from the Shaba game lodge in the Samburu district north of Mount Kenya. We were protected by apprx.100 para- military District Police, but were surrounded by approx. 200-300 well armed and very angry cattle thieves. The reason they were angry was the Police had confiscated cattle from them that they had stolen from the local farmers..AND THEY WANTED THEM BACK.These cattle thieves were prepared to do what ever they had to do to get the cattle. There was lots of shooting from both sides and bullets flying everywhere which intensified as the night went on. My Family were terrified, but when the cattle thieves started lobbing grenades at the station our driver decided we would make a run for it with a police escort. We did make a run for it in the safari van in total darkness, no lights at all,and luckily we survived our ordeal.I have informed Thomson Holidays about the Danger but have been ignored. The agents in Mombasa said they had no knowledge of the trouble although it had been reported in the Dailey Nation newspaper that five Policemen had been Killed there in the same area the previous week !!!!!Two Policemen were killed the night we were there! So ask your travel company what the situation is like in that region, ask your driver/guide when you get there,if you are not sure ask for an alternative game reserve. We were lucky it could have turned out a lot worse.
