Surely though the shacks that are causing the problem are the ones who should be dealt with, ie Baga/Calangute ? Walking away from Calangute all the way down to Aguada there is no access problems along the beach, as I said previously the shack next to Ganesh's had 40 beds which is excessive but didn't cause a problem. Also March/April there are very few customers along that part of the beach so can't understand why they have to have them all out anyway ?
I can't say about January/February as I don't visit then, but friends who do go in them months, say it is just as quiet as March/April.
No doubt all will be affected which will be unfair, but then again the usual back handers will keep all partys happy.

the trouble is that when the local government operatives are going to make a swoop of any kind, it seems the shack owners are pre-warned.
i know this because a couple of years ago, the shack that iwas using, took all the sun beds out to the back of the shack, after removing us from them.
the reason for this action was that he hadn't got the neccasary licence.
obviously the backhander to the local snitch had worked and was cheaper than the licence!!!!

Bob,
We had same experience in Candolim a couple of seasons ago.
Suddenly all the bed boys were running up the beach with all the unoccupied beds. then an hour later after the inspection they were going back down again.
This must have happened about 7 times in 2 weeks.
Occasionally they would leave a bed that was well past its prime and this would get broken up and taken away. So everyone was happy. Free rubbish disposal and beds removed what a result.

10 beds isnt really alot - We will be returning next year as a family of 5 and would all like a bed each! We always go to Bobbys, and he does have about 40 - and i have to admit it did look very overcrowded. But when more people come along to stay at Bobbys, more beds are put out to accomodate them.
I think limiting them to only 10, would cause some problems. Where would everyone go!

Baga is terrible even the poor cows (those that moo) cant get between the sunbeds! And I agree at the bottom of holiday street the shacks there can be overcrowded, Candolim isn't so bad. I for one am moving on from the North for the two weeks over Christmas to the peaceful South which reminds me of the Goa I first fell in love with all those years ago!

This sunbed problem...is this mainly in the peak season, Dec-Feb?
Or can I expect to find chaos next Easter as well?
Or can I expect to find chaos next Easter as well?
Spinner as I go in December and have for the last 9 years I cant really say for sure. I am fairly certain that Baga end of the Baga/Candolim stretch is always quite busy with sun beds and as Easter is a busy time for tourism it is possible. However this stretch of beach is the only one that I can honestly say is overcrowded, most beaches are wonderfully empty with just a few beds and shacks dotted around. Dont let it worry you
Thanks for that Goanluv.
I'm just pleased that I dont have to get up at 6am every morning to stick my towel on a sunbed!!
Not that I ever did.....but I hate that type of thing.

Is it a beach or a swimming pool? - I remember the good old days (God that makes me sound old!) when you just took your towel down to the beach and set up camp, easy! - No horrible beds to get in your way, much nice views... Anyone out there up for this or is the luxery of a bed too much to resist?
BUT as anyone will tell you who was out in Goa the Year ALL shacks were banned Goa isn't the same without the shacks - the beds are just part of those shacks! Has anyone noticed the state on the mattresses!
Sorry to disagree with you for once Rob, but sun beds are'nt just a luxury for some people. My wife had the first of two total knee replacements done seven days ago, and I can assure you it would be impossible for her to throw her towel down on the sand and get on with it. Over the years a significant number of tourists especially the long termers are older people, and I'm not sure how Rob s rather narrow viewpoint will go down with them, not very well I would suspect. Speaking of the "good old days" I can assure Rob that many of us who came on the first charters in the late 80s, are still making the long journey, and like a bit of comfort in our advancing years, by all means limit the numbers to 10, they will still be enough for all, without any total ban Alan
Now the Bombay high court has decreed tha further consultations take place re the shacks, not just sunbeds. Another layer of bribes I suppose. I know by the time they had the so called lottery for licences this year, about a month of the season had passed( most of the shacks built without them) with another layer of paper pushers I would confidentaly forcast anothet shambles. Is there any country in the world handles their tourism worse? I've never come across one. see http://www.ohraldo.in/node/24425 Alan
gramps, it makes you wonder why we go back year after year doesnt it lol. I cant get anything on the web with your website - hope its just me being a techniphobe!!

It's ok Gramps... You're always welcome to disagree with me... Although I'm going to take a hard stance here... :o) - I still go with my original post as I feel it should be up to the person if they have any specific requirements (eg bring your own bed etc - I know that sounds a little harsh) otherwise where does it stop? For example should we have concreted wheelchair access down the shoreline so they can make full use of the beach? I'm sure many wheelchair bound people would love to roll their wheels through the surf? But this would obviously detract from the beauty of the beach... Which I also think the beds do... I think nature should be left as untouched as possible. Otherwise there will be no where else to visit that is natural... (Sorry......)
