Definately hire a car!!
Visit Knossos (in Heraklion), Rethymnon, Chania, Spinalona Island, Agios Nicolaos, the Samarian Gorge, the Lassithi Plateau, the centre of the island

general typ of advice. to see real or as much as possible of real crete just go off the normal tourist areas and drive around in the island. So spend a few days to see the main atractions and then off to the road going to where ever it comes to
