Cheers,
Thanks for the info Graham. While I'm on the subject of Booze in Morocco. Does anyone know if they have a national drink e.g. Ouzo in Greece, Raki in Turkey etc. If not, what do the locals usually drink?

Hi Shirley

The national drink is Whiskey Berbere ;)

or that is their little joke, being a Muslim country it is another name for the national drink of mint tea or Thé àla Menthe :rofl

When Marlou & I went to Tunisia a few years ago we tended to go to the same quiet piano bar in the evening. We had the same barman for most of the wek, who told us a lot about muslim customs. A true muslim is not even allowed to pick up a bottle of alcohol, let alone serve or drink it. When we went for a walk outside the hotel & called in a bar - perhaps cafe bar would be a more appropriate word, we were only ever offered orange juice, coffe or tea. We used to have to ask for a lager. The men would be drinking coffee or ta and smoking their sheesh pipes.

Well, I hope it's not a case of 'when in Rome...' I'm sure I've read that alcohol is widely available in the resort.

Off to Marrakesh on Saturday for a few days.

Being a Muslim country, are these pubs as such, or do you neeed to drink in the hotel :think

HI Gemma,
when we were in Agadir there were a few pubs/bars but the booze was expensive there. I'm assuming it's the same throughout Morocco, so you'll be better off limiting any 'sessions' to your hotel ;)

There aren't "pubs" as such, and some of the bars in the medina are not perhaps what we're used to (all men really, and some a bit seedy). Head to the Ville Nouvelle/Gueliz for the evening for more choice, some of the bars are within restaurants. An exception for a drink in the medinais Kosybar's roof terrace

A few other suggestions here (Cafe Arabe also has a great roof terrace, but not cheap)

Not been, but maybe one to check out?

With a little googling, there's more, but I haven't been personally. In the main, I had drinks on the roof terrace where I stayed, found restaurants with alcohol served and called for a couple at a medina hotel (can't remember the name now!)
