First visited Turkey appx 10/11 years ago with a visit to Marmaris stopping at the Atrium Apartments in the Armutalan area.
My wife and i along with our then 4 year old daughter loved the place. The food , people and pace of life suited us down to the ground.
Since then we have visited Gumbet , Bodrum , Fethiye along with various other countries. but keep getting drawn back to Turkey.
We are trying Marmaris again this July along with our now 15 year old daughter. How does the place compare now to our last visit.Prices i understand have shot up ,but has the place grown in size? are the people still the same? and is it still a pleasant place to visit?
Since booking i have read conflicting reports regarding tourists being hastled to the point of insult be it to go in restaurants or shops.
Would appreciate any info on Marmaris life in general.
Thanks in advance
Jim
I visited Marmaris twice, only a day each time but the first time must have been about 12 years ago and the last time was last summer. Oh my god, I wouldn't have recognised the place. Even my husband who is Turkish and went to Marmaris quite a bit when he was younger said it had change beyond all recognition. What was once a pleasant harbour town has become a Turkish version of Blackpool, it is huge, very noisy, loads of British pubs, lots of hassle and, we found, very expensive.
The people are always friendly in Turkey though and you wont find that has changed.
I hope you aren't disappointed when you return. What did you think of Bodrum and Gumbet out of interest? I lived there for a few years.

Was not keen on Gumbet think its geard more to the club 20s type crowd.
Enjoyed Bodrum loved the choice of bars and restaurants , and found it could be as quiete or as lively as you wanted.

Why don't you try one of the smaller resorts near Marmaris instead such as Icmeler or Turunc. Then you can easily get into Marmaris now and again but be away from the hussle and bustle. You could go a bit further from Marmaris and try sleepy Datca but then you'd need to do it yourself rather than a package.
I love Bodrum too but really didn't like Marmaris. I also got quite fond of Gumbet because I lived there and it became my home but I never liked it before I moved there.
Last year i saw a marked decrease in the amount of "hassling" to get you into shops restaraunts etc.
I was told it was the Mayor had cracked down on it and the owners were getting into trouble for it and sometimes being closed down for a few days as a punishment.
Don`t know if thats true but it definately seemed a lot less stressful to walk down the street as opposed to the 2 years before

How do prices compare accross the resorts , seem to remember when in Fethiye a couple of years ago food and drink prices were still remarkably cheap comparedto the uk.
Do you still get those huge breads and garlic butter?

Marmaris has changed, we first went there around 10 years ago, stayed in Icmeler a few years back decided to go into Marmaris as we had some good times there, what a shock, used to be able to stroll along the beach take in the ambience, like a mad house now.
Definatly would not stay there, i would take the advice offered and go to Icmeler or Turunc, although Turunc may be to quiet for you, you can visit and see what you think, just jump the boat taxi on the beach spend the day, we loved it.
We stayed at the Barbaros beach hotel, with its own private beach and views to die for, reasonable and nicely furnished, did diy through travel company in the village
Icmeler has lots to offer and is a safe bet, were ever you go the people are still wonderful and cant do enough for you.

Would also bump up Turunc for all the reasons given.
Did a trip from there to Marmaris and we couldn't wait to get back to the tranquility of Turunc.
Was good as a comparison to what our holiday could have been like though...

We were staying in Turunc when we visited Marmaris last year and we couldn't wait to get back either!
