We have just come back from a week in sunny Cyprus, staying in King of the Toombs area, Paphos.

The week was fantastic. Great bars on Bar Street. Great Bar called BayWatch opposite Friends Bar. Cocktails for two Euro.

Overall the holiday was brill, but very expensive.

If you are interested in archaelogy then you must visit the mosaics at the UNESCO world heritage site, the Tombs of the Kings and you can also arrange to go on a free escorted walk around the old town - this is arranged from the Tourist Information office and takes place on a Thursday morning.

If you contact the Cyprus Tourist Board they will send you info and maps of the area free of charge.

Well it seems we aren't all as perfect as you Edwardes.M, it must be a lofty position to hold. Nice to see a good welcome in the Cyprus forum.

I've never claimed to be perfect, but then again, I've never claimed to know almost everything about something I can't even spell. End of.

well if you want to get fussy over it the correct english translation from the greek [and the way it is now spelt by Cypriot govenment departments] is PAFOS

[another is Nicosia should be Lefkosia and Limassol would most correctly become Lemesos]

dagnabit - hope you have a good time! If you enjoy the mosaics there are ways you can get onto the 'heath' without going through the front gate (but I do think you should pay once at least) Just look for the turnstiles when you are on the site - they work both ways (i.e. In and out). It is a great site for bird watching and there is loads of wildlife around if that is your sort of thing. We loved it and went every couple of days - always found something new to watch. The swallows 'dive-bombing' the hawks were really fun to watch.

Aah, well, if we want to be really fussy, the correct pronunciation is pafoo because in Greek/Cypriot it is spelt ΠÎ'ΦΟΥ:
Π- pi
ÃŽ' - alpha
Φ - phi
Ο - omicron
ÃŽÂ¥ - upsilon

May I apologise to pompeynick66 if I went a little OTT, but the Pafos/pathos thing really grates on me.
By the way, it's here

It's not a typo.
I know a few residents of Pafos, both Cypriot and ex-pat, and I know what they would call it!

May I refer you to my second post on this thread.
