Hi,
Having never been to greece before i am trying to choose an island/resort for July 2008- Can you please give me some advice on which would best suit?
We are a family of 4, kids 10 & 5. and complete beach bums. We look for a safe pretty beach, that shelfs gently, good snorkelling would be a bonus, quiet resort, not too interested in entertainment, enjoy a nice meal then a few drinks on the balcony, preferably looking out at sea.
Can you please suggest what area/resort would suit us best.
Thanks in advance
Have travelled quite a few Greek Islands Kefalonia being my favorite through illness in the family have not been able to return this year, but it has some beautiful beaches, local people are very friendly, scenery spectactular, plenty to see, Skiathos has the best beaches (I'm not a beach person) but they are really good as they are very clean, for me not a lot of other things appealled, most of the Islands we visited a long time ago and have changed so much, Corfu nice in places, also Zante,
sorry I can not be of much help

Pojo is right, if beaches are your no.1 priority Skiathos is hard to beat. Have a look at La Luna in Troulos. Great view from this complex close to an excellent beach.
Good morning christybell
Take a look at available flight-destinations from your area and let me know which islands are included, then I can send you more infos for everything

thanks for replies, we are flying from scotland, so unfortuanately that seems to rule out kefalonia and Skiathos (mores the pity) from what i can see, available flights are to Crete, Zante, Corfu, Kos, Rhodes.
Spyros, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning dear friend
Crete is very big island and believe me you may need 4 months vacation plus a car to see the whole island, but covers all requirements. Especially for kids there is the biggest aquarium in mediterranean at Heraklion, plus hotels with aqua games & sports.
Zante is very nice but too british, with Laganas & Kalamaki beaches beautiful, warm and sandy shallow mostly calm waters not good for snorkelling though, except if you go at the far end of the beach where there are rocks.
Corfu & Rhodes are also very nice but too british and very well known to English people that I would n't have to add anything.
Kos is a little less crowded but very nice island to visit
For all of them have a look at my other posts for web-pages regarding these islands and when you settle down ask me to send you more infos regarding hotels, restaurants, ATM's, beaches, monuments and everything else

Hi there Christybell and Spyros. I love Greece. My personal favourites are Stoupa, Parga, Lesvos, Thassos, Kefalonia (not forgetting the island Poros). This year we went to Zante (Alykanas) which I thought would not be to our liking. I have to say it was one of the best holidays I have had. The reason was my son (aged 12) was so happy in the apartments we stayed in because there was loads of other kids, so no moaning about being bored! We never got the chance to look around the island because he wanted to be at the apartment with the other kids. So now our criteria has changed. If our son is happy, so are we. OK Zante is very British but if you can drag the kids away from the pool etc I am sure it is a beautiful island.
If, on the other hand, you are lucky enough to get the kids to bed to sit on the balcony, try the Socrates Plaza, (Thomsons) Thassos (think the resort was Skala Prinou). The Socrates is brilliant. Right on the beach, good bar, beach not brilliant but safe for kids. Also because the resort is so small (only a handful of bars/tavernas) people tend to meet up back at the bar so it's a really good atmosphere. Funnily enough, even though it was totally uncommercialised, our son loved it here. He spent hours on the beach because it was only a few steps down from the pool area to the beach.
